Want some greenery in your life but don’t have the time to maintain it? Terrariums to the rescue!
A Terrarium is basically your own mini garden enclosed in a glass vessel in order to build an ecosystem that can sustain itself. Once planted, the container need not be opened even for watering and remains evergreen if maintained well.
Here are some maintenance tips if you choose to take the Terrarium plunge:
1. Choice of container
Your container of choice must have a wide mouth with a lid that shuts tight. It must be made of glass and not plastic. Depth can vary from 3 inches to a foot.
2. Which plants?
Plants that thrive in humidity and don’t require much light are your best bets. Some examples would be moss, ferns and other similar houseplants. Succulents must be avoided in closed containers.
3. Tools
To manipulate the soil and the plants, use small tools like tweezers or chopsticks instead of larger garden tools that can damage the terrarium.

4. Drainage and moisture control
To keep the roots from rotting due to standing water, a drainage layer made out of pebbles or gravel must be created. This must be topped with a thin charcoal layer that will aid absorption of any excess moisture and dispel odour.
5. Adding the substrate
The substrate or the potting mixture comprising of garden soil, cocopeat and sand must be added on top of the charcoal layer.
6. Planting time!
Any excess soil lingering on the roots of the plan must be removed before plantation. A hole has to be dug out for the plant using a finger or a chopstick. Once planted, spray some water onto it and put the lid on the container tightly.
7. Here comes the Sun
Terrarium plants thrive in the presence of indirect sunlight. South-facing windows can be ideal locations. If that’s not an option, LEDs can be set up near the container.
You now have a micro-forest in a jar. Yay!
