Have you ever thought about how rapidly technology is developing and how massive a generation rift it creates?
We are a generation, that is, the millennials whose childhood was based on playing outdoor games with friends or playing with cars and dolls or robots, but mind you, physically. Neither did our generation nor the ones preceding us had the pleasure of playing video games.
Virtual reality for us was only limited to our Play stations. However, the more the technology advanced, the more people got invested in it.
My aunt’s kid who’s barely 4 years old is always stuck on the phone playing some game or the other. He’d never know the simple pleasure of playing hide and seek with friends or getting all muddy in the fields.
With the increasing rate of technological tools for children, somewhere the innocence gets lost.
Sometimes this technology proves to be fatal and has the capability of scarring children for the rest of their lives like the new metaverse Roblox which is a gaming platform for children but has grievous and devastating facilities that are not only unnecessary but also despicable on so many different levels.
What Does The Metaverse Roblox Entail?
Roblox is an online gaming platform that consists of hundreds of millions of monthly active subscribers in nearly every country in the world. The platform was initially created for children but they have expanded their build to adults.
However, about 69% of the active users of Roblox are under the age of 16 with only 14% being over the age of 25 as of 2020.
Created by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel in 2004 and released in 2006, Roblox is a lot similar to Fortnite–parent Epic Games. It’s focused on building an immersive world within existing gaming tech, rather than investing heavily in nascent techs like AR and VR.
It is a platform that hosts user-created games of multiple genres. Roblox allows players to create their own games using its proprietary engine, Roblox Studio, which can then be played by other users. The majority of games produced using Roblox Studio are developed by minors, and a total of 20 million games a year are produced using it.
However, no gaming metaverse is without its set of flaws and Roblox is no different.

Nazi Sex Parties In Roblox
Roblox is one of the most popular platforms among children in terms of gaming. However, according to a recent report, it might not be the safest place for your children to play.
Roblox has a particular gray area called the “condos”.
The sex games on Roblox have been termed condos. These condos are spaces that have been created by users so that they can freely talk about sex and where their virtual avatars can take part in fornication with each other.
In the condos, the rules that have been set by Roblox are deemed non-existent.
In fact, it has also been found that these condos host virtual Nazi sex parties featuring bondage acts and digital strippers.
The condo rooms also consist of a strip club where avatars are dressed in Nazi uniforms, a naked man wearing just a dog collar, and a lead being led across the floor by a woman in a bondage outfit.
According to a report by BBC wherein Roblox states,
“Condo games are usually only live for a short time – often less than an hour – before they are discovered and taken down. Roblox is constantly trying to take these games offline – using both manual and automated systems. We conduct a safety review of every single image, video, and audio file uploaded to Roblox, using a combination of human and machine detection.”
What is of utmost importance and worrisome is that these games consist of an instant messenger where users can interact with each other as well as with the ones who are playing the game. Thereby, a 25-year-old person just might end up soliciting a 16-year-old without really realizing that the person behind the screen is a minor.
According to Roblox, “We have developed ‘Parental Control’ tools that can be used to restrict who children interact with and which experiences they can access.”
I mean, why would you simply assume that all parents would be adept in technology to actually go through with it?
Roblox made a very weak attempt to salvage the situation by emphasizing on how surreptitious these condos are, thereby making it very troublesome for them to find. However, according to the BBC, inappropriate sexual language was found incorporated in legitimate games too.
In a last attempt to defend itself, Roblox said,
“We have zero tolerance for sexual content or behavior of any kind, and we take swift action against anyone found to be acting in breach of our Community Standards.”
Is Roblox Really Safe For Children?
One needs to keep in mind that children, especially during their adolescent phase, can be quite impressionable in nature. Given the raging hormones that make no sense to them at that point, they often turn to things that help them cope with their anxiety. They immerse themselves in worlds where they’re happy and content.
According to a digital psychologist who studies behavior online, Dr. Liraz Margalit,
“People behave differently in the metaverse – just as they do online. You have anonymity and you have the disinhibition effect. This platform provides you with the playground to do anything you want.”
Thereby, one can never be fully aware of the extent of trauma that is being imposed upon these children.
Hence, the question remains – is metaverse truly safe or does it still have a long way to go?
