The police in Maharashtra investigated Bollywood rapper Badshah on Monday because he was involved in a case where some mobile apps, like Fairplay, were accused of showing Indian Premier League (IPL) games without permission from Viacom 18 group, who had the rights to broadcast them.
Badshah and some other famous people apparently encouraged people to use a betting app and watch cricket matches through it.
What Did Maharashtra Cyber Police Say?
The rapper was summoned by the Maharashtra Cyber police for questioning and accordingly reached their office at World Trade Centre in Cuffe Parade at around 3 pm.
“He and several other actors and celebrities have violated the broadcast rights of the complainant. The others involved in the promotion of the app will also be questioned,” said a senior officer of Maharashtra Cyber.
On April 20, 2023, a report was filed with the police by Vinitchandra Sharma, who works as the legal vice-president at Viacom 18 group. In this report, he said that the games were shown without permission on Fairplay and that a lot of actors supported and advertised the betting app.

Piracy Detected By Viacom-18
Viacom18 owns many TV channels and a streaming platform called VOOT.
In October 2021, their team that fights against piracy found out that there were seven apps—
- Pikashow,
- Foxi,
- Vedu,
- Smart Player Lite,
- Film Plus,
- Tea TV, and
- Wow TV
—that were showing Viacom 18 TV shows and other content without permission.
They also discovered that from March 31, 2023, to April 7, 2023, the Fairplay app was illegally showing Tata IPL matches.
Sharma reported these apps to the Maharashtra cyber cell and filed a case against them. He said they were showing Viacom 18 content without permission and making money from it, causing the company to lose more than ₹100 crore.
What Did Badshah’s Lawyer Say?
Badshah’s lawyer, advocate Prashant Patil, said that the rapper didn’t do anything bad. The Cyber police called him to help with their investigation, and he gave them all the documents they asked for. He also promised to work with them in the investigation.
