In the past few days, there has been a shocking increase in COVID-19 cases in India.
On Saturday, India saw a whopping 89,129 new cases being registered which saw the total number of coronavirus infections being taken to 1,23,92,260.
Sunday however, saw the highest single-day spike in cases in the country as per data from the Union Health Ministry. Sunday that is 3rd April recorded 93,249 new COVID-19 cases and deaths of 513 people in a span of 24 hours.
This was the highest spike in the country since September 2020 with 11 states/ Union Territories (UTs) seeing the highest spikes including Maharashtra, Punjab, Karnataka Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Chandigarh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, and Haryana.
Apparently, over 90% of the national COVID-19 case tally came from these states.
This has made many states and regions implement lockdowns, night curfews and more. Here we take a look at some of it.
Lockdown
Maharashtra
According to reports, the Uddhav Thackeray government has announced that the entire state will be under complete lockdown during the weekends.
There is also a night curfew that had been implemented some time ago that applies every day and lasts from 8 pm to 7 am.
Pune
A night curfew has been set in place on orders of the Pune divisional commissioner Saurabh Rao. The curfew lasts from 6 pm to 6 am and was implemented on Saturday 3rd April 2021.
Not just that, but religious places have also been told to remain closed for the next 7 days and public gatherings apart from weddings and funerals have been forbidden. For weddings a maximum of 50 people and for funerals, a maximum of 20 people are allowed to collect at one place.
Along with this, eateries, bars and restaurants in the district are also to remain closed for 7 days starting from 3rd April 2021.
Jammu and Kashmir
Jammu and Kashmir’s L-G Manoj Sinha on 3rd April stated that “In view of rising trend in #COVID19 cases in J&K & likelihood of young children getting infected & transmitting infection in large numbers,ALL classes upto& including Class 9 in schools will be closed for 2 weeks in all schools beginning on Monday, 5 April till 18 April 21 in J&K.”
Through his Twitter, he further explained that “Classes 10, 11 & 12 will also be closed for one week in all schools from Monday, 5 April 2021 till 11 April 2021 in entire J&K. Further, all gatherings for social and customary functions will be restricted to 200 only and after following due COVID SOPs.”
Chhattisgarh
Chattisgarh’s Durg district administration has implemented a total lockdown of the area from April 6th to 14th along with night curfew too.
The night curfew is also there in several other districts such as Raipur and more.
Odisha
From April 5th, Odisha will have a night curfew from 10 pm till 5 am.
Chief Secretary Suresh Chandra Mohapatra in an order stated that, “In the interest of the general public and to prevent transmission of infection, it is directed that night curfew in the districts of Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Balangir, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Koraput, and Malkangiri will be in force from April 5 till further orders.”
Telangana
A village in Telangana called Sirpur has put a self-imposed lockdown on the region that will last till April 15th.
As per the announcement, only grocery stores and other essential services will be allowed to operate during two time slots that is between 6 and 10 am and from 5 pm to 9 pm.
Just a week ago the Telangana government had also shut down all educational institutes barring the medical colleges and even postponed the examinations.
Karnataka
Karnataka will also be implementing restrictions on public places from 7th April 2021. While theatres will operate at a 50% capacity, gyms and swimming pools will be told to shut down. Common facilities in apartment complexes like party halls, clubhouses, etc have also been told to remain closed.
These guidelines have been issued after experts from the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) advised the state government to do so and will be in force till April 20th.
The situation will be reviewed post 20th April in order to see what steps to take next.

Flights and Travel
Domestic flights in India have currently not been affected by the rising COVID-19 cases.
However, international flights have seen some restrictions, with India extending restrictions on how many flights are allowed to travel to and from the United Kingdom.
These restrictions will stay active till mid-April and in that time where Indian airlines can only operate 15 such flights per week, British airlines can carry on with their usual number of flights.
In December last year, India had even completely suspended flights to and from the UK after a new coronavirus strain was found there.
A limited air travel rule was extended to February 14th, 2021 and has now been extended even further.
Saudi Arabia had also banned flights to and from India sometime last year, however, reports state that they might be getting lifted around May this year.
In India itself, Mumbai mayor Kishori Pednekar has commented on how train travel could be restricted for common citizens if the rising case numbers continue.
As of now, commuters are only allowed to travel during certain time periods, them being from 12 pm to 4 pm and from 9 pm to the end of the day.
Pednekar, however, has commented that “Currently, common citizens are allowed to travel in local trains with restricted timings. But now the government has planned to allow travel for only essential service workers, like it was earlier during strict lockdown.”
As per information from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Maharashtra is currently the state with the highest tally of new COVID-19 cases with Kerala and Karnataka following closely.
Delhi also features in the top 10 states with the highest number of new COVID-19 cases with its numbers around 672,000.
