The Indian entertainment industry with television and cinema is in theory, timeless. However, the people who constitute the industry don’t have timeless careers.
While some start off as superstars, leaving behind great legacies, others die out over time. Some have jinxed careers from the very start, others remain in the background for most of their lives. Not all get the taste of success.
The entertainment industry is also a gateway to seasons of unemployment for actors. Some adopt alternative careers and some struggle.
UNEMPLOYMENT IN THE ENTERTAINMENT SECTOR
A number of actors who were once known for their work in television or cinema are now known for engaging in other activities.
Being unemployed in this sector, ultimately pushes these actors to find newer methods of earning a livelihood. Some marry rich, own sports teams, open up designer clothing stores or restaurants and some struggle to make ends meet, despite once having been in the limelight.
WHO ARE THE INDIAN MOVIE AND TV ACTORS WHO HAVE STRUGGLED WITH UNEMPLOYMENT?
Twinkle Khanna
Coming from a family of renowned actors, it was expected that Twinkle Khanna would be a natural fit for the film industry. However, luck wasn’t on her side and her acting career died as quickly as it began.
Today, she is unemployed in the entertainment industry but is a witty writer, having written books and columns on instances from her own life.
Preity Zinta
Preity Zinta’s career was a blockbuster one, however, in the recent past, she has been straying away from Hindi cinema. After a series of failures at the box office, she chose to look elsewhere.
She is the co-owner of the IPL team King’s XI Punjab and is also the owner of Stellenbosche Kings franchise of South Africa’s T20 Global League.

Sunil Shetty
Shetty had his fair share of ups and downs in the Indian film industry. After a dry spell in the movies, he began expanding his career options. Today, he is the owner of two restaurants in Mumbai and is the captain of the Mumbai Heroes cricket team in the celebrity cricket team.
Neena Gupta
Gupta is a stellar example of a strong, independent woman. But she recently had to ‘ask’ for work via an Instagram post. She is seen doing supporting roles in subsequent films but not substantial enough to sustain a permanent career.
However, she has now starred in various films like Panga, Badhaai Ho, and Abhinav Sinha’s Mulk.
Adhyayan Suman
Adhyayan Suman has a history of movies that didn’t do well at the box office. His father tried time and again to launch him, but failed miserably each time.
He was recently a part of the Kangana-Hrithik debacle and is now nowhere to be seen.
Harman Baweja
The Hrithik look-alike appeared in a few movies like Love Story 2050 and What’s Your Rashee, most of which flopped at the box office. He seems to have absconded completely from the Indian film industry ever since.
Karisma Kapoor
A star of the 90s, Kapoor attempted a comeback in the film industry through her movie Dangerous Ishq, but the movie did terribly at the box office and since then Kapoor hasn’t taken up any major projects and is seen modelling for various designers from time to time.
These actors are only a few among many who have faced unemployment within the film & television industry with each of them having a different experience post their departure.
While some settle for alternative careers and accept reality as it is, others yearn for the erstwhile fame and glory which has now become a moment in passing.
