Pokemon Go has taken over the world, quite literally. You’ll find a whole bunch of people everywhere trying to be the very best, like no one ever was.
The motive is not just to catch them, it’s also to train them and take over territories or ‘gyms’ in Pokemon language.
So I came up with 5 tips to help assist you on your Pokemon journey based on what all I’ve learned through extensive research. (not even kidding)
- Learn how the Nearby system works.
It’s important to get a hang of how to track Pokemon. The footprints indicate the distance. The more footprints, the farther away the Pokemon. Just start walking in a direction, if the the footprints increase, or drops down in the order, you’re going the wrong way. When the footprints disappear, the Pokemon will be visible in your map.
- Know when to increase the combat power (CP) of your Pokemon.
Increasing their combat power might not seem important in the beginning as all you do is catch new ones and that does not involve any battles. But once you hit level 5, you’ll need strong Pokemon to win at the gyms. See the semi-circle on the top? That’s its CP limit. Meaning a species can only fulfill its potential and not more.
- Battle smartly in gyms.
Gyms are a little complicated to understand. There are three teams: Red, blue and yellow. You cannot take over a gym if it’s owned by your team. In that case, it’s only a practice match with one of your Pokemon to increase the level of the gym. But if it’s owned by another team, you get to challenge them with six of your Pokemon and lower their prestige. If it goes down to 0 the gym is up for grabs. The level of the gym is proportional to the number of Pokemon guarding it. For example, at a level 5 gym, you’ll have to beat 5 Pokemon. Use type advantages like fire Pokemon being weak against water Pokemon.

- Hatch eggs to gain strong Pokemon along with experience and stardust.
You can get eggs from Pokestops along with other useful items. The more km you have to walk for the egg to hatch, the better the reward. The 10km egg can fetch you a pretty rare Pokemon along with 1000 exp for hatching and free stardust. 5km gets you 500 exp and 2km gets you 200 exp.
- Evolve your Pokemon to make them a whole lot stronger.
Evolving Pokemon can be quite a hassle. You need to get a lot of the same kind of Pokemon to gain candies. For example, it takes 12 Pidgey candies for a Pidgey to evolve into a Pidgeotto and 50 Pidgey candies for it to further evolve into a Pidgeot. For every Pidgey you catch, you get 3 candies and for transferring each to professor Willow, you get a further candy.
Now go out there (the whole motive of Pokemon GO) and put your skills to the test. And remember, gotta catch ’em all!
