Wikipedia is surely known as one of the biggest sources of information across the world, but as widespread as it is, it’s also known to not blindly trust whatever is written on a Wikipedia page.

Due to its option to edit and add or delete content from a page by actual people and considering it relies on outside contributors and editors, its pages can often have exaggerations or wrong pieces of information at times.

This is often done as a joke or in a way to mislead information but now Wikipedia has come under fire from the Pakistan telecom regulators.

What Deadline Has Been Given To Wikipedia?

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on February 1st had given a statement that they had “degraded” Wikipedia services on grounds of non-compliance with a direction given earlier to remove content that was deemed “unlawful”.

In a press release that they tweeted out, it was written that “PTA has degraded Wikipedia services in the country on account of not blocking/removing sacrilegious contents.”

It further explained that “Wikipedia was approached for blocking/removal of the said contents by issuing a notice under applicable law & court order(s). An opportunity of hearing was also provided, however, the platform neither complied by removing the blasphemous content nor appeared before the Authority. Given the intentional failure on part of the platform to comply with the directions of PTA, the services of Wikipedia have been degraded for 48 hours with the direction to block/remove the reported contents.”

PTA also stated that “In case of non-compliance by Wikipedia the platform will be blocked within Pakistan,” and that “The restoration of the services of Wikipedia will be reconsidered subject to blocking / removal of the reported unlawful contents. PTA is committed to ensuring a safe #online experience for all #Pakistani citizens according to local laws.”

However, interestingly, as per reports the statement doesn’t really clarify exactly what content is objectionable and needs to be removed and what measures have been taken against the platform.

Wahaj-us-Siraj, Chief Executive Officer of internet provider Nayatel has been quoted by Bloomberg saying “There is slowness and definitely it’ll impact especially those who use Wikipedia for education and information purposes.”
