Grenada consists of the island of mainland Grenada itself and two smaller islands called Carriacou and Petite Martinique. There are several small uninhabited islands which lie to the north of the main island and are a part of the Grenadines – located in the Caribbean Sea northwest of Trinidad and Tobago.
Lovely Grenada is known as the “Island of Spice” due to its production of nutmeg and mace crops; this is not the only thing that Grenada is famous for. Read on to find out why Grenada should be your vacation destination of choice.
The Underwater Sculpture Park
With so many unique places to visit, let’s start at The Underwater Sculpture Park in St. George’s. The sculpture park is a conceptual installation made to preserve the coral reefs. Jason deCaires Taylor is the creator of the underwater sculptures located off the west coast of Grenada.
The eco sculptures serve as artificial reefs. They’re made from metal rebar and concrete and have attracted over the years an array of endangered marine species from areas where the damaged reefs previously existed.
The sculptures blend well into the underwater environment. The art tells its visitors about the cultural and historical events and can be viewed via snorkelling or diving excursions and via a glass-bottomed boat.
Amazing Beaches
If you’re looking for amazing beaches with white sand and clear blue sea look no further because you have found paradise. Grenada has impressive beaches, and one of the most accessible is Grand Anse Beach.
Grand Anse is a 3 kilometre stretch with lots of shade and stunning views. Another option is Morne Rouge Beach quieter than most this secluded spot is popular with honeymooners. For a private beach experience you can visit St. Patrick’s, L’anse aux Epines, or St. David’s in these areas you can find secluded private beaches that you’ll have to yourself.
Lastly consider La Sagesse Beach, the beach is part of the Las Sagesse Nature Center and Bathway Beach on the northeastern end of the island, along with Levera Beach that is in the Levera National Park. Levera Beach offers fabulous views of the three nearby off-shore islands called Green Island, Sandy Island and the wonderful Sugar Loaf.
Waterfalls and Natural Landscapes
After the incredible beaches found only in Grenada, the waterfalls are the next must-see visitor attraction. The Annandale Waterfall is situated close to the capital, St. George’s. For travellers willing to explore a bit further, several other waterfalls offer more secluded experience including Mt. Carmel and Concord Falls.
One of the most amazing natural waterfalls on the island is the Seven Sisters Falls, which is located in the Grand Etang National Park. We suggest you sign up for a tour of the falls, which includes a 45-minute hike, and the walk is not for the faint-hearted.
After the hike, you can swim in the natural pool and enjoy a refreshing drink before you descend, do it before lunch and make the most of the nation’s favourite dish – Pelau.
Pelau is a lovely seafood, chicken and rice dish that’s perfect for satisfying your hunger after a fun day of sightseeing. This savoury, one-pot meal typically includes chicken breast, prawns and cooked beans, vegetables, brown sugar finished with coconut milk and herbs.
All washed down with some rum punch. Each bar has an old family recipe for you to enjoy and that means every rum cocktail is different.
With all that sightseeing you will need a place to stay and nowhere is more luxurious than Silversands.
