The 49th International Emmy Awards were held earlier this week with remarkable aplomb as OTT platforms declared dominance once again over traditional media.
Like the previous year, Indian media found an accepting audience in the international sphere as they bagged nominations in three different categories. However, unlike the previous year which saw Delhi Crime bag the Best Drama award, the Indian shows returned partially empty-handed.
The only reason I wrote partially is because of the fact that Vir Das had the most amazing “salad” at the Emmys.
However, to venture forth, it is time to shortlist the ones to add to your binge list and honestly, the entire nominee list should be a part of your collection now. The following are the winners and the Indian nominations that made the world take note.
Best Drama Series
Indian Entry: Aarya

Winner: Tehran
Other Nominations: El Presidente, There She Goes

Best Actor
India’s Entry: Nawazudding Siddiqui (Serious Men)
Winner: David Tennant (Des)
Other Nominations: Roy Nik (Normali), Christian Tappan (The Great Heist)
Best Comedy
India’s Entry: Vir Das’ For India
Winner: Call My Agent
Other Nominations: Motherland: Christmas Special, Promesas de Campana
India’s foray into international media has been a fair bit late but OTT platforms have made the entertainment industry much more inclusive.
The acclaim received by such shows and movies alike is a testament to the amount of capability our entertainment industry can and will achieve in the near future. However, it is time for the regional industries to pack some heat as the Bollywood furore, more often than not, casts a shade over other domestic film industries.
