This Wednesday, on the occasion of the 43rd AGM of Reliance India Limited, Chairman Mukesh Ambani made several announcements related to Jio that left all of us dumbfounded.

Big Announcements

One of the biggest and probably unforeseen announcements that the company made was of Google investing Rs. 33,737 crores for a 7.7% stake in Jio platforms.

In addition to this, Mr. Ambani also disclosed that the company will soon be launching Jio 5G solution, Jio TV Plus, Jio Glass, and Android-based affordable smartphones in partnership with Google.

Mukesh Ambani also talked about the success of Jio Meet, India’s first and only cloud-based video-conferencing app. He stated that it has already been downloaded by more than 5 million users within just a few days of its release.

Earlier, when Jio Meet was launched, it seemed like a replica of the Zoom video-conferencing app. However, it certainly provided us with some new features but it was just like adding cherries on the already prepared cake.

The announcement of launching Jio TV+ which will aggregate all the content from over 12 different OTT (Over The Top) platforms under one umbrella, once again, stirred up similar arguments. Jio TV+ is being compared to Apple TV and their features are hardly divergent.

Jio TV+: Somewhat Similar Or A Copy Of Apple TV?

Jio TV+ would combine the content of Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+ Hotstar, SonyLIV, Zee5, YouTube, and many more. Jio TV+ will provide these services to its Jio set-top-box users with just one login instead of logging in different apps separately.

Now the customers can easily search movies and shows based on contextual data such as genre, cast, crew, and even mood across different platforms with a voice assistant like Amazon Firestick’s Alexa.

On the other hand, Apple TV also features most of the OTT platforms including Netflix, SonyLIV, Amazon Prime, Zee5, and Disney+ Hotstar.

Here also, we can stream everything from our favourite TV show to new movies, that too with just one login, as we can log in with Jio TV+. Just like Jio TV+, it also has a voice assistant named Siri.

Jio TV+ categorizes titles according to genres such as education, news, travel and living, kids, and more. Not surprisingly, Apple TV renders us with the same feature where it has categorized different genres.

If Jio TV+ offers the same services as Apple TV then, what is the difference between these two?

It looks like Reliance copy-pasted Apple TV’s UI for Jio TV+. Even the content discovery page and search page of the platforms looks familiar.

However, Mukesh Ambani has not revealed all the features of Jio TV+ but those which have been revealed are indistinguishable from Apple TV.

The Jio Fiber set-top box’s Jio TV+ would surely emerge as the toughest competitive device to Amazon Fire TV, Mi Box, Apple TV, and Chromecast in the Indian market.

The “Made in India” tag is certainly the USP of the product for the consumers which will make us opt for Jio TV+ instead of Apple TV or any other device even though their features are one and the same.
