India’s answer to COVID-19 comes from Bharat Biotech in the form of COVAXIN. After being evaluated in almost 1,000 people in the first two test phases, Haryana Home and Health Minister Anil Vij had offered to be the first volunteer for COVAXIN’s Phase 3 efficacy trials on November 20th.
Anil Vij Is COVID Positive After A Vaccine Shot
Days after getting a shot of COVAXIN on 20th November, he tested positive for COVID-19. He is currently admitted to Civil Hospital in Ambala. What is yet to be determined is whether he was given an actual shot or a placebo.
In his announcement on Twitter, he has said, “I have been tested Corona positive. I am admitted in Civil Hospital Ambala Cantt. All those who have come in close contact to me are advised to get themselves tested for corona.”

Response From The Health Ministry
“The antibodies against the infection build up in a human being only after a specific number of days pass after the second dose of the vaccine is taken, since this is a two-dose vaccine. The minister in question has taken only one dose of the vaccine,” the Union Health Ministry said after Mr. Vij’s announcement.
Responses From The Vaccine Producers
Bharat Biotech announced that the clinical trials of COVAXIN are based on a two-dose schedule, administered 28 days apart. “The vaccine efficacy will be determined 14 days post the second dose. COVAXIN has been designed to be efficacious when subjects receive both doses,” the company spokesperson said, reacting to the news of the Haryana minister testing positive.
According to top officials of the National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (ICMR-NICED) in Kolkata, the phase 3 trial of the indigenously developed coronavirus vaccine candidate, COVAXIN, will be available in November 2021.
The interim report may be available by May 2021 at the earliest according to officials.
