Marriage is undoubtedly one of the most pious and pure forms of social events because it’s about the joining of lives and families together especially in India.
Also, it’s a million dollar market where everyone gets to earn money out of it, ranging from the caterer to the decorator to even the bride and groom.
Because this is an age-old transaction which takes place between the groom and bride’s family.
A transaction, you ask!?
Yes, a transaction because behind the veil of marriage is actually a silent agreement wherein the families literally enter into a contract of giving up the maintenance of the girl to the boy for cash and kind both.
And this “gift” is nothing but dowry, a menace which although the govt. has banned in full force still, continues in our society ranging from the highest to the lowest levels.
Take a look below:
It may be concluded that the abolition of the dowry system would be a landmark social reform.
With whatever intentions this custom may have been starred, it cannot be denied that it has failed to give equal status to women in the society.
The time has come to scrape the roots and branch of dowry system.
Unless we become more progressive in our outlook, less orthodox in our ways and more revolutionary in our ideas, dowry will remain the bane for our society.
