Breakfast Babble: Why My Laptop Is Slower Than My Grandma

-

Breakfast Babble is ED’s own little space on the interwebs where we gather to discuss ideas and get pumped up (or not) for the day. We judge things too. Sometimes. Always. Whatever, call it catharsis and join in, people.

There was a time when my laptop was a young, enthusiastic creature, booting up in seconds and opening 15 Chrome tabs without panting like an asthmatic uncle climbing four floors. But now?  It has the energy of my grandma after a full Diwali cleaning session—exhausted, wheezing, and refusing to cooperate.

Pressing the power button is like waking up to my grandma from her afternoon nap. First, there’s no response. Then a slight flicker, followed by a long, dramatic pause. Just when I start considering my life choices, a slow, reluctant beep emerges—almost like her groggy “Haan beta, kya hua?” when I wake her up for chai.

Opening a Word document feels like asking my Dadi to find her specs. She’ll check the bedside table, the kitchen, under the pillow, even on her own head—only to realize they were hanging around her neck all along.

Similarly, my laptop frequently struggles and freezes, as if it’s deep in thought about life, before finally responding, the document opens… but not before I have a mini existential crisis.

My laptop heats up faster than a pressure cooker on a high flame. The fan makes noises that could either be the sound of a jet engine or my Dadi’s cooler in peak summer—both equally concerning. At this point, I’m just waiting for my laptop to let out a final phssshhh like an overheated pressure cooker before exploding.

Much like my grandma when she doesn’t get her evening chai on time, my laptop throws tantrums when the WiFi is weak. It refuses to load anything, gives me the digital version of a death stare (that spinning blue circle of doom), and finally sulks until I restart it—just like how my grandma stops talking to me if I forget to call her on Sundays.

At this rate, I might as well switch to pen and paper. Or, better, just ask my grandma to write my assignments—she’s clearly got better speed and efficiency than this ancient piece of technology. Until then, I’ll keep refreshing, rebooting, and regretting my life choices, one frozen screen at a time.
