North Korea is considered many things, but a popular tourist destination is not exactly one of those things.
While there are certainly many travellers who do visit there simply out of an intense curiosity about this closed-off country and its many restrictions on not just its citizens but even tourists, it’s not exactly a destination promoted on travel sites.
However, it seems the country is trying to change that, with a tourism ad featuring Majeong Beach in the South Hamgyong Province popping up on the internet.
What Is The Ad Showing?
A recent North Korean tourism ad shows young Russians playing and enjoying themselves at the Majeon beach in the South Hamgyong Province of North Korea.
Released by the state-owned Korea International Travel Company, the ad is reportedly an attempt by the country to attract tourists since it could be reopening its borders by the end of the year.
The ad was first posted on the subreddit r/northkorea on 19th September with the caption “Russians advertising North Korean beach in bikinis”.

The tourists in the ad are a bunch of Russian men and women, who are enjoying a day out at the beach, swimming, jet skiing, and playing beach volleyball. One of the strange things about the ad is that some of the women are wearing bikinis, however, they are banned in North Korea, a totalitarian country.
The ad instantly intrigued a lot of people, with some commenting on the economic profits the country could earn if they properly opened up the gates to tourists, to others saying how strange the ad felt.

One user wrote “Imagine if North Korea actually used their potential. They have so many untouched resources + a bigger area than SK” and another commented, “If they wanted to they could have become more wealthy and popular than South Korea lol, they received the good side of the peninsula and wasted it”.
One user wrote “Another place for Russians to avoid the draft for the Special Military Operation?” while another replied that the ad was “Really selling it with the awkward Baywatch run!”
One user commented “it’s amazing how a North Korean beach exactly looks like a North Korean road. empty of people.”
Another questioned “Aren’t bikinis banned in the DPRK? I remember them saying so in My Brothers and Sisters in the North. Unless it’s only a law for locals and not tourists”.
Another user questioned the authenticity of the ad writing “I’m somehow 85% convinced they shot all this “generic beach footage” in some random ass Russian beach in the middle of the Black Sea.”
One user wrote, “you have to be very sick of mind to go to a surreal and totalitarian country like North Korea to vacation as if everything was fine.”
Several people also noticed how the ad looked home-made, with the camera seeming to be of low quality, the people in the ad not having any microphones which led to their speaking parts being almost ineligible due to the waves and wind, and how the editing of the ad itself was sub-par.
