It is very well in the public eye how stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra loves to put up a show of his dissent to the government’s opinions.
Also, his out-of-the-ordinary ways of displaying political variance of thoughts with Indian journalist Arnab Goswami, who is also the editor-in-chief of Republic Media Network, never fail to cause a stir.
After all, his confrontation with the latter aboard an IndiGo plane made rounds on social media for a long time.
Kunal Kamra’s recent move was yet another continuation of his list of peculiar tasks. But this time around, he partnered with Anurag Kashyap, who is an Indian film director, actor and producer, and is similarly known for his staunch disagreement with the government’s policies.
The ‘Chappal’ Award
So, it was the 48th birthday of Anurag Kashyap on 10th September 2020 when he, along with Kunal Kamra, went to Republic TV’s office in Mumbai. Both of them held a framed slipper which they pronounced as ‘Paragon excellence in journalism award’.
Outside the news channel’s office, the duo was also seen posing with their so-called awards which they couldn’t give to Arnab Goswami because they were not let in by the security personnel.
Later on, both of them posted the picture on their Instagram accounts to let people know what ‘best birthday’ for the director looked like.

What Instigated Them?
Well, putting aside the duo’s previous disagreements, this time the show was about the journalistic practices of the news channel’s reporters and the sort of hullabaloo that was created in and around the investigation of actress Rhea Chakraborty.
The channel was alleged to have been indecent and way more intervening for the sake of news bytes. Anurag even hinted at Republic’s uncontrolled behaviour through his caption.
Some Other Crude Facts
On 9th September 2020, two of the Republic’s journalists were taken into police custody after they were allegedly caught trespassing on Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s farmhouse.
Over the past year, many journalists including Republic TV’s former Jammu & Kashmir Bureau Chief, Tejinder Singh Sodhi, have resigned on the grounds that the channel follows a trajectory of unethical journalism.
Lastly, all we have to say about the chappal award is that the public is now responsible for deciding who was wrong and for what reason.
