Cricket and Cinema- the 2 C’s which is embedded in the blood of Indians. They are born with this indefinite love for both of them. For years one has seen the way they turn mad and sentimental for anything related to it. And amidst this, noticing the ever-changing trends of Bollywood is not that difficult.
What goes comes back again!
Like a lifecycle, these trends have a circular effect to it. Initially, Bollywood produced films for pure entertainment, with over the top action, romantic duets, dances and beautiful sceneries etc. and has come back to this genre of films over the century. With subtle changes over the decades the Indian Cinema saw a parallel cinema movement rise from the 70s-80s. But as they say nothing remains for long, the fickle minded audience started rejecting these art films and reign of romance and action films began. Thus completing the circle of Bollywood, the film culture came back to square one.
Rise of the Art Form
Following India’s Independence from the late 1940s to 1960s, the Hindi Cinema saw its Golden Age. With films like Pyaasa (1957), Kagaaz ke Phool (1959), Shree 420 (1955) etc. commercial cinema thrived in India. With some social message for the Independent India, these films were a great source of entertainment for the Indian audience. With time, 60s-70s saw the upcoming romantic action flicks, with hero doing everything which can be unbelievable many times and audience clapping and whistling for it. A typical teenage love story, separation of siblings at birth, police- thief sequences were the success formulas at that time.
Diverging Roads!
But during the 1970s the so called “Parallel Cinema” entered mainstream Bollywood. Directors like Gulzar, Shyam Benegal and Mahesh Bhatt etc. led the bifurcation. Masala flicks paved way for these art films which tried to promote realism in their own way. Further with this new kind of cinema, new actors emerged. Om Puri, Naseerudin Shah, Farookh Sheikh, Pankaj Kapoor, Deepti Naval, Smita Patil, Shabana Azmi and great theatre artists like them found their footing in the Hindi Cinema. These people were known for their hardcore acting, minimal dance and action sequences and the films had deep stories in them. The movement helped in the making of some of the best films of Indian Cinema like Maya Darpan, Arth, Ardh Satya, Chakra, Ek Ruka Hua Faisla and many more.
Back to Square One!
And with 90s and production of multi-starrer films like Hum Aapke Hain Koun, Hum Saath Saath Hain, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge etc. the romantic, masala flicks, formula films of Bollywood were back. And the present 100 crore club is a testimony to that. 2013 saw many 100 crore films and all of the them were out and out entertainers like Chennai Express and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani which had typical stories making audience run to the multiplexes to leave their minds at home and relax themselves. After all, this is what Bollywood is for- Entertainment, Entertainment and Entertainment.
