Pakistan PM’s Viral Embarrassing Moments

-

Pakistan’s PM Shehbaz Sharif is back in the news for awkward moments that happened with him and US President Donald Trump at the recently held Gaza Peace Summit in Egypt.

Now, it is nothing new for such moments to end up going viral. Public figures often face a lot of scrutiny, but the gaffes or embarrassing moments on the global diplomatic stage always go viral or are ridiculed relentlessly.

It is just happenstance that Sharif has experienced multiple such moments in recent years. From translation headset bungles to awkward handshakes and over‑the‑top flattery, these incidents have repeatedly been amplified by media and social media alike. What happened at the summit has only brought attention to the new and old such moments.

Trump Bringing Up Asim Munir Before PM’s Introduction

The recent Gaza Peace Summit being held in Egypt actually resulted in several awkward moments between Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and US President Donald Trump.

The summit was held “with the participation of leaders from more than 20 countries” and aims “to end the war in the Gaza Strip, enhance efforts to achieve peace and stability in the Middle East, and usher in a new era of regional security and stability.”

It was when Trump began speaking about Sharif that it all went downhill. First, during his talk about the Pakistani PM being present at the summit, Trump randomly brought up Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir and how he was his favourite, even though Munir was not present at the summit.

Trump said, “Prime Minister Sharif of Pakistan, and also, I have to say, my favourite field marshal from Pakistan, who’s not here, but the prime minister is here, and you’re going to give his regards. Where are you?”

The camera then panned to Sharif, who just stood there awkwardly smiling and clapping. Trump can even be heard saying, “You wanna say what you said to me the other day,” before he called Munir up to the podium to speak.

Sharif’s resulting speech was another viral moment of embarrassment, since he chose to lavish heaps of praise on Trump for a good few minutes.

Sharif said, “Had it not been for this gentleman, who knows, India and Pakistan are both nuclear powers, had he not intervened with his wonderful team during those four days, the war could’ve escalated to a level… and who would’ve lived to tell what happened.”

He then went on to say that Trump was “the most genuine and most wonderful candidate for the Peace Prize because he has brought not only peace in South Asia, saved millions of people … And today, here in Sharm el-Sheikh, achieving peace in Gaza, is saving millions of lives in the Middle East.”

Trump Praising PM Modi Before Sharif

Trump even went on to praise Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the midst of all this. He said, “India is a great country with a very good friend of mine at the top [referring to Modi] and he’s just done a fantastic job. I think Pakistan and India are going to live very nicely together.”

Being Overlooked As Modi‑Putin Walk Past Him

Another viral moment from the same SCO Summit was seen in video clips, where PM Modi and Putin walked past Sharif, while he visibly looked on.

Several interpreted this as a snub, as there was no acknowledgement or interaction between Sharif and the other leaders. Reports described Sharif’s posture as “left awkward,” while netizens compared him to “background furniture” or someone trying too hard to be part of a group.

Headphone Fumble With Putin

The Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif, fumbling with his headset while meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin at the 25th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit (SCO) in Tianjin, China, which was held in September this year.

One user who posted the viral video on social media commented, “Pakistani PM Shehbaz Sharif’s Headphone fumble at SCO leaves Putin laughing, again!” Putin even demonstrated to Sharif how to do it properly before an attendant came to help.

Another user questioned, “Why does he always get so nervous in front of Putin?” while a third remarked, “Putin teaching him how to put. Lol.”

This was actually not the first time that Sharif had had trouble with a headset, especially during a meeting with Putin. A similar incident occurred at the 2022 SCO Summit in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

As both leaders were expected to use translation earpieces, Sharif struggled to insert them properly, repeatedly asking, “Can somebody help me?” The device fell off again, even after assistance, and Putin was caught smiling and chuckling at the delay.
