Recently two groups of the royal family got into a clash at the Udaipur Palace when the palace trust refused entry to the recently coronated Maharana of Mewar, Vishvraj Singh.

The trust is run by his uncle Shreeji Arvind Singh Mewar and cousin Dr Lakshya Raj Singh.

Who said the royal families of India don’t have their own drama?

A clash soon erupted between the family members and their supporters with some people getting injured and security being tightened by the district administration.

What Happened At Udaipur Palace?

Vishvaraj Singh Mewar was recently crowned the 77th Maharana of Mewar. However, when he tried to access the palace, he was refused entry by family members.

Singh reportedly wanted to visit his family deity placed in the Dhuni Mata temple which is located in the palace complex along with the Ekling Shiv Temple about 50 km from Udaipur. Both of these places are managed by a palace trust run by his uncle Shreeji Arvind Singh Mewar and cousin Dr Lakshya Raj Singh.

Both the royal groups are descendants of the legendary Rajput warrior king Maharana Pratap.

The Shri Eklingji Trust formed in 1955 is responsible for the Mewar royal family’s palaces, temples, and forts’ management.

Bhagwat Singh, the 75th Maharana, who earlier managed the trust, had two sons, Mahendra Singh (older son) and Arvind Singh (younger son), and before his death gave control of the trust to his younger son.

This excluded Mahendra Singh, who is Vishraj Singh’s father, and he even reportedly filed court cases against his father when he was still alive protesting this move.

Eventually, Bhagwat Singh’s last will dated May 15, 1984 ‘banned’ Mahendra Singh from his family and named Arvind Singh as the executor who post his father’s death became the chairman of the trust.

This year, after Mahendra Singh’s death, his son Vishraj Singh was named the 77th Maharana of Mewar.

The coronation of the BJP MLA from Rajasmand was held as per traditions at the Chittorgarh Fort.

However, when he tried to access the palace the Udaipur Palace trust in its notice claimed that Vishraj Singh is not a trustee and doesn’t hold any legal title in the trust.

The trust further in notices issued on Monday, the very day that Vishraj Singh was to make his visit, stated that unauthorised entry into its palaces and trusts is prohibited.

When Vishraj Singh was turned away from the palace gates, his supporters grew angry at the supposed disrespect and tried to break down barricades placed by the administration. When the cops tried to control the mob there were even some who pelted stones and made attempts to forcefully open the gates.

District Collector Arvind Kumar Poswal said, “The law and order situation is well under control. Talks were going on with palace representatives as well as the society representatives. We have agreed on certain issues, while talks are still going on for certain others.”

District Collector Poswal also stated that the disputed Dhuni Mata Temple site has been taken into receivership saying “The district administration has moved to take the disputed site of Dhuni Mata Temple into receivership. If either of the two groups wants to register a case, it will be registered.”
