The University Grants Commission (UGC) recently updated its list of fake universities from across India. The list now shows 21 such universities that the UGC does not recognise with their degrees also being invalid.

Delhi once again has the highest count, having eight such institutes, while Uttar Pradesh comes a close second with four fake universities. The others are spread across five other states including Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and West Bengal.

The UGC has flagged these institutes since they are violating the UGC Act of 1956 which states that “An Act to make provision for the co-ordination and determination of standards in Universities and for that purpose, to establish a University Grants Commission.”

The Act also prohibits any institute from using the word ‘university’ without approval from the commission. However, according to employees, these fake universities get around not needing permission from any authority as they “do not comply with the norms of the material world.”

UGC Secretary Manish Joshi has stated that degrees from these institutes will not be recognised for any event such as higher education or employment.

Students are always advised to seek admission to accredited universities to make sure that they are receiving legitimate education and not wasting their time or money unnecessarily.

The rest of the fake universities listed by the UGC are:

Delhi:

  • Commercial University, Daryaganj
  • United Nations University
  • Vocational University
  • ADR-Centric Juridical University 6. Indian Institution of Science and Engineering

Andhra Pradesh:

  • Bible Open University of India

West Bengal:

  • Institute of Alternative Medicine and Research

Kerala:

It is very important to ensure one does thorough research on which college they are applying and whether its degrees are actually legitimate or not.
