On Sunday, 21st July 2024, Joe Biden, the current president of the United States of America (USA) announced that he would be withdrawing from the 2024 US Presidential race.
In his official statement, he wrote “It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remained of my term.”
Biden has now endorsed Vice President (VP) Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee saying, “Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump.”
Extreme Meme Fodder
The whole internet has been taken over not just by the news of Joe Biden withdrawing and endorsing Kamala Harris, but also by all the memes that people can’t stop making. The topic has certainly been extremely fertile fodder for the netizens who have brought up various memes like the ‘Joever’ and Kamala Harris’ coconut meme.
It’s not just the youngsters that are using Harris’ coconut meme, but even other Democrat government officials are taking part in it. Hawaii Senator Brian Schatz posted on X/Twitter a photo of himself climbing a coconut tree with the caption “Madam Vice President, we are ready to help,” while Colorado Gov. Jared Polis used a coconut and a tree emoji along with an American flag in his sign off when endorsing Harris in a statement.
The history of the coconut tree meme from Kamala Harris’ speech at the swearing-in ceremony of commissioners for the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity for Hispanics last year in May.
During her speech, she said “My mother… she would give us a hard time sometimes, and she would say to us, ‘I don’t know what’s wrong with you young people. You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?’” adding “You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you.”
The meme ‘Joever’ is also being used which combines the words Joe of Joe Biden and ‘over’ and is meant to signify “physical and mental defeat, sheer hopelessness” as per a Forbes report.
The meme originally came from the 2020 US presidential elections when the term was used to question Biden winning the election but eventually spread across social media lingo quickly.

This is not entirely surprising, considering many had been asking for Biden to step down from the presidential race especially after his performance in the debate against Donald Trump, and the Republican Party also mocking him constantly about not being fit to run for another term as President.
It wasn’t just the Republican party calling for Biden’s resignation but also 36 congressional Democrats and many others were asking him to step down from the race before the Democratic National Convention in August.
Biden, according to The Washington Post, took this decision at his vacation house over the weekend in the presence of White House counsellor Steve Ricchetti, senior campaign adviser Mike Donilon, deputy chief of staff Annie Tomasini, and senior adviser to the First Lady Anthony Bernal.
