Governments across India whether it be the Union or particular states, have lately become quite trigger-happy with regards to snipping your access to the rest of the world via the Internet.
Maybe your connectivity was affected at some point where you live, maybe not. But, given the frequency of such occurrences, it wouldn’t hurt to have some survival tips in a temporarily non-digital world.
1) ALWAYS HAVE SOME COLD HARD CASH
In the case of government blackouts, access to payment networks such as the ubiquitous UPI or even POS (Point of Sale) machines at brick-and-mortar shops may be affected. To avoid being unable to make urgent payments, always make sure you have some emergency cash on you.
2) KEEP AN EMERGENCY PHONE READY
In doomsday-like scenarios, a trusty blast-from-the-past feature phone may just be a crucial instrument to your survival. With generally ample battery life dwarfing most smartphones, you will be able to stay connected to friends and family via calls and SMSes.
3) USE GOOGLE MAPS’ OFFLINE FEATURES
In case you need to travel to an unknown location during a blackout, it is advisable that you download the region’s data on the Google Maps application beforehand thus eliminating your need of being connected to the internet to navigate.

4) MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ENOUGH PHONE BALANCE
It may sound like a no-brainer but if you find yourself relying on a feature phone, make sure it has enough balance for your connectivity needs. Something that’s easy to forget with 4G plans that usually cover everything you need under a single plan.
5) GET A BROADBAND CONNECTION
If you reside in an area that’s hit by blackouts often, you may consider getting a broadband connection for your home if you don’t have one already since sometimes broadband lines are spared while mobile networks are not.
6) IT’S TIME TO DOWNLOAD STUFF!
You don’t know how long you may have to live under a metaphorical rock before you get to be online again. Having some entertainment downloaded beforehand can be a blessing in such times.
