What All Is Wrong With The Great U.S.A. These Days?

159

The US is not really in a great position ever since a certain someone, name rhyming with Drumpf, came into office and turned the entire nation upside down.

It seems I, even being an Indian know so much more about the US politics and political scenario at the moment than I have ever known or cared to know.

But it almost seems that the great nation of US is falling apart at the seams with one problem after another cropping up and hounding the people.

It is not just an unsuitable person being the president, but a myriad of other things that seem to be burdening the country bit by bit.

Recently, the latest Trump travel ban having been approved by the Supreme Court and allowed to be acted fully has brought the protests back in full form, resisting the obviously anti-Muslim nature of it.

However, that is not the only thing going in the US these days. While I cannot list down all the things, let us take a look at some of the things that are going wrong in the US:

1. Net Neutrality:

The first would probably be the issue of net neutrality which US is battling with. India had itself fought this very same issue a year or so back and came out a winner.

The entire saga was first started by the Trump appointed chairman of FCC, Ajit Pai who was previously a lawyer at Verizon, a telecommunication company.

Pai had been trying to repeal the 2015 Obama brought net neutrality rule and now as the new chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, he has finally taken the step towards doing so.

The FCC will now vote next Thursday on whether to keep the old rule or bring in the new rules as per Pai which could be extremely harmful by making the net a fully paid sector.

If the ruling goes in favour of Ajit Pai, companies like Verizon and Comcast could have incredible power over the internet, how much is provided to a user, the user will also have to pay extra for new services and the entire internet will be quite monopolized.

2. Entertainment Industry In Chaos:

It also seems as if the entertainment industry, Hollywood, television and even the online one are all in a state of chaos due to the rising sexual harassment allegation popping up every day.

The Harvey Weinstein case really popped up the pandora’s box and practically every second male in the US entertainment industry is having to face one sexual harassment allegation after another.

The recent case when Kevin Spacey dealt with his own allegation, in an oh so mature and wonderful manner (sense the sarcasm), Netflix took a major step and removed him without any further delay.

After that, Netflix has again fired Danny Masterson the actor from their show ‘The Ranch’ after hearing of his rape allegations.

The NBC host of ‘Today’ show Matt Lauer was also fired after complaints came of him having engaged in inappropriate work behavior.

Apart from that Charlie Rose, Russel Simmons, Jeffrey Tambor, Senator Al Franken, Roy Moore, Louis C.K., Dustin Hoffman, Ben Affleck, Johnny Depp and more have been slapped with allegations of sexual assault/harassment/inappropriate behavior.

3. Rampant Sexual Misconduct:

The above point would apply to not just the entertainment industry but even the political and corporate world where big names have been called out for their extremely inappropriate behavior.

Just today, Senator Al Franken even resigned from his seat after about 30 Democrats voted for his immediate expulsion from the Senate.

However, this along with the #MeToo campaign has really brought forward the truth that although the US might be a superpower but it is nowhere as safe for women as it is made out to be.

4. Trump Travel Ban:

This surely constitutes its own point seeing as the issue has been going on since January and is nowhere close to being resolved.

While the courts of US had put a ban on it when it initially came out claiming it to be extremely discriminatory towards certain religious groups, the Supreme Court first allowed a partial lift of the ban around  July and now it has fully lifted the ban from the travel ban issue.

It will now be ironing out the details and hearing the lower courts, in order to clear up any discrepancies, doubts, and wrongs that the ban still might have in it.

5. Pedophile As Senator:

Perhaps the most disturbing and worrisome issue would be the support that alleged child molester and pedophile Roy Moore is getting from President Trump to becoming a part of the Republican Senate.

As per an investigation done in November by The Washington Post, Moore has been accused of sexually assaulting about 4 women who were between the ages of 14 to 18.

The Republican strategist Steve Schmidt on a live interview with MSNBC has been gone to say that, “Roy Moore is a pedophile. He’s a child molester.”

However, the President outrightly supported him with this tweet that said, “Democrats refusal to give even one vote for massive Tax Cuts is why we need Republican Roy Moore to win in Alabama. We need his vote on stopping crime, illegal immigration, Border Wall, Military, Pro Life, V.A., Judges 2nd Amendment and more. No to Jones, a Pelosi/Schumer Puppet!”

This is not terribly shocking as Trump himself has been accused of sexual assault and even was caught bragging in front of a camera:

“You know I’m automatically attracted to beautiful – I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait,” Trump was caught saying in the recording, when it was released in 2016 by the Washington Post and NBC News.

He even went on to say that, “When you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything,” “Grab them by the p****. You can do anything.”

The current situation of US is quite worrisome and could threaten to overwhelm the country especially as even its enemies are growing stronger each day. The North Koreans are speedily testing and improving their nuclear missiles which could threaten to annihilate the entire country.

Update: It seems that America has dodged a bullet with the Moore fiasco by finally electing Doug Jones a Democrat, as the U.S. Senator from Alabama today.
