The 2024 Indian general elections or the Lok Sabha elections are just around the corner now, being held across the country from 19th April to 1st June and things are just heating up.

Considered to be one of the largest elections in the world, six national parties are contesting in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections:

  • BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party),
  • INC (Indian National Congress),
  • CPIM (Communist Party of India (Marxist)),
  • BSP (Bahujan Samaj Party),
  • NPP (National People’s Party) and
  • AAP (Aam Aadmi Party)

The results of the election will be announced on 4th June, but till then a lot has been happening on the political forefront. In the midst of all this, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor posted on X, talking about who or what he believes could be the alternative to India’s current Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.

What Did Shashi Tharoor Say?

On 3rd April 2024, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, posted on his X/Twitter page writing “Yet again a journalist has asked me to identify an individual who is the alternative to Mr Modi. The question is irrelevant in the Parliamentary system.

We are not electing an individual (as In a presidential system), but a party, or coalition of parties, that represents a set of principles and convictions that are invaluable to preserve India’s diversity, pluralism and inclusive growth.

The alternative to Mr Modi is a group of experienced, capable and diverse Indian leaders who will be responsive to people’s problems and not driven by individual ego. Which specific person they will choose to be Prime Minister is a secondary consideration. Protecting our democracy and diversity comes first.”

Tharoor essentially said that the election is not about choosing one individual, but the group of leaders who will help to make the country a better one and work for the people.

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor is going to be contesting for the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha constituency and is challenged by BJP’s Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar and the ruling Left’s former MP Pannian Raveendran.

According to reports, the I.N.D.I.A (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance) bloc, which Shashi Tharoor is a part of and is made of 28 opposition parties, has also called out the ruling party of BJP for the arrest of opposition leaders and investigations by federal agencies right before elections.

In the last two months, both Arvind Kejriwal (CM of Delhi) and Hemant Soren (CM of Jharkhand) have been arrested without proper charges being given in court. BJP, however, has denied any association with these instances or misusing government agencies in any way.
