When we think Kaziranga, we think the one-horned Rhino.
Obviously, the endemic animal is the jewel of Kaziranga’s crown, the national park boasts of a plethora of other animals that make up for its vivid ecosystem.
Nestled across three districts of the North-Eastern state of Assam, the National Park encompasses a humongous stretch of land, water bodies and an immaculate network of trails within it. People from all over the world come to see the famous one-horned rhinoceros in the park and the park has been the studio to various documentaries about the animal.
Kaziranga was conceived in 1904 when Lady Curzon urged her husband, Lord Curzon, to do something about the dwindling population of rhinos in the area. She was on an excursion and couldn’t see a single rhino in the area.
The national park is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and houses two-thirds of the world’s population of the one-horned rhinoceros.
However, Kaziranga has more to offer than the rhino. Kaziranga is home to the highest density of tigers among protected areas in the world and was declared a Tiger Reserve in 2006. Two of the largest snakes in the world, the reticulated python and rock python, as well as the longest venomous snake in the world, the king cobra, inhabit the park.
Kaziranga also has the largest number of wild Asiatic Buffaloes in the world. The same goes for the Eastern Swamp Deer. It is home to a variety of migratory birds, water birds, and game birds. Birds such as lesser adjutant, greater adjutant, black-necked stork and Asian Openbill stork migrate from Central Asia to the park during winter.
Undoubtedly, this century-old park has an aura and exuberance of its own enabling it to travel through the passage of time- only coming back stronger after every adversary, may it be the devastating floods or the menace of poachers.
