Even though the recent Lok Sabha elections were a big shake-up for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), where they scored lower than the proper majority and needed to rely on their coalition to form the government, Narendra Modi still entered his third term as the prime minister of India.

A question that has been circulating the public and political circles for years now is who is going to be next after PM Modi.

A recent survey has taken a look at the top choices for the successor of PM Modi as BJP’s prime ministerial candidate.

What Does The Survey Say?

India Today recently released their bi-annual flagship survey called Mood of the Nation Survey and took a look at who the people think are some top candidates for BJP’s next choice for PM’s seat.

India Today’s MOTN survey was carried out by CVoter and surveyed 40,591 respondents comprising from all the 543 Lok Sabha sectors of the country between 15th July to 10th August 2024.

Amit Shah was seen as the top choice, with a backing of over 25%, even surpassing names like Yogi Adityanath and Nitin Gadkari.

However, while this is a strong number, it’s reportedly lower compared to the MOTN surveys of February 2024 and August 2023 where he scored 28% and 29% votes respectively.

Yogi Adityanath, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, however, was not too behind, standing at the second spot with 19% votes.

The India Today MOTN survey for August 2024 placed Nitin Gadkari, the Road Transport and Highways Minister, in third place with 13% votes, and following were Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan at the 4th place with 5% ratings.

Coming to regional sectors, Amit Shah seems to enjoy high popularity in the south where the region gave an approval rating of 31%, higher than even the national number of 25%.

The names of Rajnath Singh and Shivraj Singh Chouhan though have seen a rise in popularity just as both Amit Shah and Yogi Adityanath saw a decline in their ratings.

The biggest jump seen was for former MP CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan who went from a minor 2.9% rating in the August 2023 edition of the survey to 5.4% in the recent August 2024 survey.

The jump is said to have been caused after Chouhan was appointed as he joined the Modi 3.0 cabinet in June 2024 as the Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare Minister in New Delhi.

While certain names are going around for Modi’s successor in the BJP, it has also been quite difficult to match up to the widespread popularity of any politician.

Political scientist Christophe Jaffrelot in an interview with The Wire was quoted saying, “People like Modi have no successor, and it’s very difficult to succeed a man like Modi, especially when you don’t have any dynasty at the end.”
