The much-awaited Season 2 of Mirzapur released on 22nd October 2020. There have been enough discussions with some even having expressed their disappointment regarding the story not meeting their expectations.

Undoubtedly, the performances delivered by the actors were all highly appreciated, especially Pankaj Tripathi playing Kaleen Bhaiyya.

The question that has recently been raised is if this series portrays the real-life story of a gangster in particular.

And to the surprise of a majority of the audiences, the story does have a close resemblance to that of a gangster from Uttar Pradesh named Munna Bajrangi. What’s more? He was hailed as the king of Mirzapur itself.

Here is what we know about the real-life Munna Bhaiyya.

Who Was He?

Munna Bajrangi was quite a dreaded name in the Mirzapur, Jaunpur and Varanasi area.

Originally known as Prem Prakash Singh, he had gotten involved in the world of crime as early as 17 years of age. The first complaint registered against him was for murder and the possession of illegal weapons.

After having committed a few independent crimes of his own, he finally joined a gang led by Gajraj Singh in Jaunpur. A quick learner of the trade, Singh had attended school till class 5, after which he developed his love for arms.

In the 1990s, he moved on to join an even more influential gang controlling the whole of the Eastern UP region, under Mukhtar Ansari.

As Ansari’s right hand, he operated from the Mau region and even murdered the BJP leader Krishnanand Rai in a gang clash against Brijesh Singh. This was followed by the murder of another BJP leader – Ramachandra Singh.

An End Of An Era?

The gang wars under Singh’s reign were considered some of the largest that had ever taken place in Uttar Pradesh. He had a bounty of Rs. 7,00,000 on his head, for whoever would get him arrested.

After some 40 murders and extortion cases, he shifted to Mumbai with his entire family, according to some sources. Singh is known to have been the one who introduced the use of AK-47 in the gang wars of UP.

Finally, in 2009, the police tracked him down in Delhi and arrested him, in coordination with the Mumbai Police. Singh had always been a supporter of the Samajwadi Party, led by Mulayam Yadav Singh.

During his period in the prison too, he tried leading a political stunt. However, that failed and he was murdered by one of his inmates, Sunil Rathi, in July 2018. Rathi had commented on the same saying that Singh had called him ‘chubby’, which didn’t go down well with the former.

With Munna Bajrangi being killed, it was the end of an era of gang wars in UP. He had become one of the most feared gangsters of his time. Sounds similar to our Munnai Bhaiyya from Mirzapur, doesn’t it?

Well, either way, I wouldn’t dare to spoil the entire show for you.
