Margarita With a Straw

Margarita, with a Straw is a coming of an age film starring Kalki Koechlin, it had its World Premier at The Toronto International Film Festival in the Contemporary World Cinema Category. The film received a wonderful response by the audience.  Kalki yet again seems set to deliver a splendid performance in her upcoming film “Magarita, with a straw”. Previously the actress has delivered great performances in films like Dev D and The girl in the yellow boots. Now days we can also find her taking up numerous social issues, she efficiently uses media to bring attention towards them. She has so far succeeded in doing so; she has effectively commented and drawn attention on social issues like rape and child abuse. Her upcoming film Margarita with a Straw also deals with similar issues; it is a coming of an age film. Coming of an age films always seem to leave a profound impression on the viewer and have always been an ace of spade among mediocre, morose and bland cinema that we find nowadays. The recent Kangana starrer hit, Queen, was another film of the same genre and it worked magic in the minds and hearts of the audience.

MWAS-Poster-Wide
The trailer of the movie was released in the beginning of this month and has been received warmly by the audience. In the film Kalki plays the role of a Laila, who suffers from cerebral palsy. The three minute trailer begins with Laila getting ready to meet someone. She meets a guy that she likes in a secluded part of a library, both seem to enjoy each other’s company and end up kissing. When Laila realises that she is in love with the boy she decides to confess the same, however her love is not reciprocated and she is left hurt and shattered. She manages to get a scholarship to study in New York University. It is in the realm of this new country and new space that she starts discovering herself. She meets a young woman; this meeting brings Laila closer to realising her own sexuality. Both of them share a level of intimacy synonymous to one shared by lovers. The story continues here on with Laila fighting with her disability and trying to discover herself. The movie seems promising; watch the trailer here:

This movie is the journey of a young woman towards the path of self discovery and seems to be a distinct one. The film does not only portray Laila as someone who is conquering her disability, also she is discovering her orientation, of being bisexual .Talking about physically disabled people, the society in its own small ways has started accepting these people as human beings too, however we still have a very long way to go. It is important to look at such people as differently able and not disabled.

Homosexuality at least in our country will take a long time to find acceptance by the society. Certain sections of the population have however modernised themselves with the changes in society and thus accept homosexuality as a matter of choice. But majority of Indian people still dwell the orthodox notion of love, a man loving a woman and vice-versa. Until homosexuality finds its acceptance, the concept of bisexuality will also remain a misunderstood concept.
Movies like these are what we need in Indian cinema; we need a change in the mindset of the people in our country. There is a growing need for people to have an open mind towards people who are differently- abled and homosexual/bisexual people. These individuals are an important and indispensable part of any society and thus need to be treated with respect, than being outcasts in their own society.

This film is set to release in our country next year. Well I am surely going to book my ticket in advance. Margarita_with_a_Straw_2_7753_12557
