On Friday, 8th December 2023, Trinamool Congress member Mahua Moitra was expelled from the Lok Sabha because of the cash-for-query scam.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi was reported to move the resolution since her conduct was “unbecoming of an MP” and letting her remain a Member of the Parliament was “untenable”.
The MP was accused of taking bribes from Dubai-based businessman Darshan Hiranandani so she could ask questions in the Parliament on his behalf.
The Ethics Committee, headed by BJP MP Vinod Kumar Sonkar, advised that Mahua should be “expelled” for “serious misdemeanours” along with there being an “intense, legal, institutional inquiry by the Government of India in a time-bound manner” to investigate the “money trail of cash transactions between Mahua Moitra and Darshan Hiranandani as a part of quid pro quo”.
The report also claimed that Mahua sharing her Lok Sabha portal credentials with others was a “threat to national security”.
The report in its conclusion stated “Transfer of login credentials to unauthorised elements could provide an opportunity to such elements to access the system leading to several potential hazards. First, given the threats the country is facing from State and non-State cyber actors, such leakage of credentials could render the system vulnerable to serious cyber-attacks and potentially disable the system entirely, thereby, crippling the functioning of the system that could impact National Security by creating false documents or fake narratives, etc.”
Moitra, who reportedly wasn’t allowed to speak in the Parliament or cross-examine the evidence against her spoke to the media in front of the new Parliament building soon after her expulsion.
Here are some of the things she said in a blaze of anger and claiming that this was an injustice against her.

After the Parliamentary Affairs Minister moved the resolution of Moitra’s expulsion, ministers from the Opposition parties in the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) walked out as a form of protest.
Trinamool leader Kalyan Banerjee also spoke about how Moitra not being allowed to speak was against her constitutional right ”Today, we are acting like a quasi-judicial body and the aggrieved party, Mahua Moitra, had a right to be heard”.
While BJP’s Heena Gavit said “The proposal of the Ethics Committee should be accepted and a message should be sent that anyone who does unethical practice will be expelled by this House.”
