India certainly has a smoking problem, that it’s trying to bring under control. As per reports, India has roughly around 12 crore people who smoke and has been a part of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control on February 27, 2005, that is trying to bring that number down. In a November 2021 report, it was also said that India could see a 30% reduction in tobacco use by 2025.
A 2019 report claimed that around 1 million people in India die annually due to smoking, making it the 4th leading cause of non-communicable diseases (NCD) along with cancer and heart diseases.
Amongst the many states of India that have sizeable smoking populations, Kolkata is one of them, that according to data has around 48% male smokers in state average as compared to 28% across the country. So one has to wonder how this smoking culture grew to such a large extent in the state.
