The Russia-Ukraine war has existed since 2014, but the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 marked a significant escalation of the fragile peace agreements between the two countries.
Some reports claim that around 20% of Ukraine is occupied by the Russian military, not counting the millions of people displaced and the human rights violations that the United Nations Human Rights Office claimed were being committed by Russia in occupied territories.
While Ukraine has been holding its own against Russia in the invasion, the instability it is causing is being felt by the country and its people.
This is why reports that negotiations to end the Ukraine war plan to start after US President Donald Trump had a phone call with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky is certainly a crucial development.
What Is Trump Doing In The Russia-Ukraine Conflict?
Trump and Putin’s Communication:
On February 12, 2025, Donald Trump had a 1.5-hour-long phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the war in Ukraine and how peace is important.
In his post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “I just had a lengthy and highly productive phone call with President Vladimir Putin of Russia. We discussed Ukraine, the Middle East, Energy, Artificial Intelligence, the power of the Dollar, and various other subjects.”
He revealed that they talked about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine writing, “But first, as we both agreed, we want to stop the millions of deaths taking place in the War with Russia/Ukraine. President Putin even used my very strong Campaign motto of, “COMMON SENSE.” We both believe very strongly in it. We agreed to work together, very closely, including visiting each other’s Nations. We have also agreed to have our respective teams start negotiations immediately, and we will begin by calling President Zelenskyy, of Ukraine, to inform him of the conversation, something which I will be doing right now.
Trump also stated that Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Director of the CIA John Ratcliffe, National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, and Ambassador and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff will lead the negotiation talks to success.
He wrote, “Millions of people have died” in the war and that “it must end. No more lives should be lost! I want to thank President Putin for his time and effort with respect to this call… I believe this effort will lead to a successful conclusion, hopefully soon!”

Trump and Zelensky’s Communication:
Trump also spoke with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky shortly after his call with Putin. In his post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “I just spoke to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine. The conversation went very well. He, like President Putin, wants to make PEACE. We discussed a variety of topics having to do with the War, but mostly, the meeting that is being set up on Friday in Munich, where Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio will lead the Delegation. I am hopeful that the results of that meeting will be positive.
It is time to stop this ridiculous War, where there has been massive, and totally unnecessary, DEATH and DESTRUCTION. God bless the people of Russia and Ukraine!”
President Zelensky also reported about his phone call with Trump, in which he agreed that it is important to halt Russian aggression and restore peace in the country. He also mentioned that security guarantees and Ukraine’s territorial integrity are of the utmost importance.
In a Facebook post, Zelenksy wrote about how he had “a meaningful conversation” with Trump about “opportunities to achieve peace [and] discussed our readiness to work together at the team level, and Ukraine’s technological capabilities—including drones and other advanced industries.”
He further wrote, “We also spoke about my discussion with [Treasury Secretary] Scott Bessent and the preparation of a new document on security, economic cooperation, and resource partnership. President Trump shared details of his conversation with Putin.”
Concluding his post Zelenksy wrote, “No one wants peace more than Ukraine,” and how “Together with the U.S. [sic], we are charting our next steps to stop Russian aggression and ensure a lasting, reliable peace. As President Trump said, let’s get it done.”
The biggest now remains whether these negotiations will be fruitful and lead to the end of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in the year 2025. It is still early days and as of yet there has not been any communication reported between Putin and Zelensky regarding peace talks.
