Many famous artworks and antiquities are worth millions of dollars yet are lousily safeguarded. Thus, it is not at all surprising that these items get so easily stolen.
Interestingly, the tales of how these items were retrieved is remarkable, even sometimes more interesting than how these thefts took place.

Throughout our history, many artefacts and treasures have been stolen or been disappeared mysteriously. Only very few of them have been ever recovered.
Most of the time these thefts take place during times of war or disaster. Due to low manpower, these precious artworks had minimal protection, thus making them prone to theft. Sometimes, invading military forces stole the treasures and took them to their homeland as a symbol of victory.
There are a lot many treasures still left to be discovered or created by humans.
