The rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital by a Kolkata civic volunteer Sanjay Roy, the prime accused, has created a furor across the entire nation. The crime took place between Thursday night and Friday morning.
The junior doctor and four other colleagues were dining in the seminar room of the RG Kar Hospital, watching Neeraj Chopra win the silver medal at the 2024 Olympics, and afterwards, the victim decided to stay back to rest while the others left.
According to CCTV footage, Sanjay Roy entered the building around 4 am on Friday. The trainee doctor who according to her mother “wanted to serve the society and save the lives of others. And look what happened to her” was then raped and murdered between Thursday night to Friday morning.
The autopsy revealed horrifying details about the extent of the abuse the victim had suffered through stating “There was bleeding from both her eyes and mouth, injuries over the face and nail. The victim was also bleeding from her private parts. She also has injuries in her belly, left leg… neck, in her right hand, ring finger and… lips.”
A senior Kolkata Police officer also said, “Her neck bone was also found broken” and as per NDTV, the post-mortem report claimed the accused hit her with so much force that it shattered her glasses which pierced into her eyes.
The post-mortem report also stated “The mouth and throat were constantly pressed to prevent screaming. The throat was strangled to suffocate. The thyroid cartilage broke due to strangling.”
Sanjay Roy, one of the main accused was arrested by the Kolkata Police and sentenced to 14 days of judicial custody by a Kolkata court. He has been charged under sections 64 (rape) and 103 (murder) of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS).
However, there are speculations that there are more involved, since as per rumours multiple semen samples were found from the victim’s body. This has not been proven to be true yet though.
Horrifying details have come out though about the main accused in this case that just make the incident so much more disturbing.
Addicted To Porn
The police have revealed that Roy was addicted to pornography, finding many such things on his mobile phone with most being violent and disturbing.
As per PTI’s quote, a police officer said, “The pornography content in his mobile phone was quite disturbing and violent. We wonder about the state of his mind as watching such things is quite unnatural.”
Another source speaking with India Today said, “During the examination, police found several violent pornographic videos on Sanjay Roy’s mobile phone. His mobile was almost full of violent porn videos which indicate that either he was a mentally ill person or a pervert person.”
Possible Alcoholic
Police sources had also claimed that Sanjay Roy was inebriated before the crime took place and that he would often go to a place behind the hospital to drink alcohol and watch porn according to reports.
He was also allegedly still intoxicated when he was arrested at the barracks of the 4th Battalion.

Violent Toward Wives
Roy also reportedly had married four times and during the investigation, it was revealed that he was often physically abusive toward his wives. The police also added that he was known as a “womaniser”.
An India Today report also reveals that Roy confessed to being violent toward his mother, sister, and wife. Previously, the accused’s mother-in-law had even filed a complaint at the Kalighat Police Station against him physically abusing his wife.
The mother-in-law speaking with India Today TV said, “After he married my daughter by hiding his previous marriage, we came to know several things against Sanjay. We even filed a police complaint against him for beating and torturing my daughter.”
She also added, “He duped several people by taking a lot of money in pretext of giving job in police.”
Civic Volunteer With Kolkata Police
The accused who is also said to be a trained boxer got acquainted with senior police officers and then became a part of the Kolkata Police Welfare Board. After this, he was placed at the police outpost at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the site of the incident.
TMC MP Santanu Sen concerning this said, “He (Accused Roy) was part of the Welfare Board of Police. Now, what role he has in it or whether he misused it that only the board committee members can tell.”
Another India Today report claims that Roy would stay in the Kolkata police fourth battalion barracks despite being just a civic volunteer and not eligible to enter those areas.
A police source alleged that on 9th August morning Roy was found to be sleeping at the barracks, while another Kolkata police officer on anonymity said, “Why was no action taken against the accused back in August 2022? Who gave him permission to stay inside the barracks?”
Had Access To All Wards
Reports claim that the accused Sanjay Roy had access to every ward, room, and building of the hospital. Investigators have also said how Roy who became a civic volunteer in 2019 would misuse his police connections.
A police official said, “He enjoyed easy access to all departments due to his role in the police welfare association. He would check on relatives and family members of police admitted in the hospital. On different points he was also posted in RG Kar Hospitals outpost. He used a motorbike with a Kolkata Police sticker on it. He stayed in police barrack and many civic volunteers or people working with the welfare association or community policing knew him.”
According to reports, the network of touts is spread across all parts of the hospital from creating tickets for the Out-Patient Departments (OPDs), to Emergency to admission department to the laboratory.
Dr Sams Mushafir in an Indian Express report was quoted saying, “This tout culture is rampant in all the medical colleges of the state. They enjoy support from the local administration and due to their proximity to the ruling party representatives, they are fearless. As students, we protested against this several times. If touts are stopped from entering the hospital premises, problems caused by the outsiders can be prevented to some extent.”
It is speculated that Sanjay Roy the accused was an “important man” in this network.
As per a Deccan Heral report, a police officer said, “He had access to all departments owing to his proximity with some senior police officers and the hospital authorities. Nobody had the guts to stop his unhindered movements in and around the hospital.”
The officer also said, “There is ample evidence that the accused was throwing his weight around because of his proximity with senior police officers. This aspect is also under investigation.”
Went To Sleep
The cops have also given information that after committing the crime Roy went back to his place, and slept. In the morning he washed his clothes presumably to destroy evidence, however, police caught blood on his shoe.
City Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal said, “After committing the crime, the accused went back to the place where he was staying and slept till late on Friday morning. After waking up, he washed the clothes he was wearing during the crime to destroy evidence. His shoes, with blood stains on them, were found during a search.”
The brutality of the crime and how the administration reacted to it has led to a wave of anger and protests across the country with doctors going on indefinite strike or only attending to Emergency duties.
According to reports, the Assistant Superintendent and the Head of Department (HoD), Chest Medicine Wing of the RG Kar Hospital, had told the family that the victim had died by suicide on the hospital premises.
The assistant superintendent was the first to speak with the deceased’s family on 9th August and the victim’s father revealed that he said that their daughter “died by suicide”.
Junior doctors and students at various state-run hospitals, such as RG Kar Medical College, National Medical College, and Medical College, Kolkata have been protesting.
The Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA) has also supported these protests about how the safety of doctors is important and “We can no longer stand by while our safety is compromised. The recent horrific rape and murder of a fellow doctor on hospital premises is the final straw.”
While the junior doctors were still working to see emergency duties till Sunday, since Monday they’ve ceased all work.
The Central Maharashtra State Association of Residential Doctors (MARD) and the Delhi AIIMS’ Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) have also gone on an indefinite strike, “suspending all elective and non-essential services including OPDs and wards to protest the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor” as per Indian Express.
