Maharashtra held its Assembly elections from 7 am on 20th November. The voting was held in a single phase for the legislative assembly’s 288 members of the richest state in the country.
In these times, it becomes quite important that the public personalities who enjoy fame and influence in the community do their duty as citizens.
Every vote counts is something every individual eligible to vote must remember, regardless of who they’re voting for.
In this climate, Harsh Goenka, a billionaire businessman spoke about how the elite of Maharashtra don’t understand this and will probably not be voting in this election.
What Did Harsh Goenka Say?
Harsh Goenka, the RPG Group chairman, posted scathing words on his X/Twitter profile on 20 November about the elite people of Mumbai who don’t feel it necessary to vote.
He called them out on how they let go of a very important duty they have toward their own nation while having meaningless discussions about it with no action behind it.
He also wrote about the class and economic divide and that such people do not want to appear like a common person or actually have to make some effort to cast their vote.
He wrote, “The men and women of Malabar Hill may not vote today because… they’re busy debating whether their chauffeur will take the Mercedes or the BMW to the polling booth.”

The 66-year-old billionaire further wrote “It’s the fear of dirtying their designer loafers on uneven roads, the struggle of matching their Gucci sunglasses with their Manish Malhotra outfits, and the endless WhatsApp debates about the right candidate over quinoa salads.
It’s the horror of encountering common folk in the queue, the dread of stepping out into the November heat, and the realization that there’s no valet parking at the polling station. Why vote when the real concern is whether Ozempic is safe or Mounjaro is better? After all, democracy can wait, but the waist cannot!”
User @sahil_vi commenting on this said though that “Please lead by example sir. Please vote and share evidence on twitter and inspire lakhs to follow your example”.
Several others added their own comments to Goenka’s tweet with user @BlueToothBites writing “Oooh I wonder what will happen to their Mercs and Beemers, loafers and sunglasses and what not when the K2As come at the doors. Mumbai very much already headed in that direction. All their riches and money will be useless when the monsters show u at their door. But who cares?”
User @ParagMandpe also replied “They live in a different world hence are indifferent to the issues faced by common citizens. Also what if they have to stand in a queue where the maid is just in front, wouldn’t that be the lowest point in their life?”
Maharashtra has often struggled with low voter turnout. For the state assembly elections in 2019, almost 62 to 64 urban constituencies saw below-the-state average voter participation.
Among the regions that continuously see low engagement at polls despite having large electorates are Mumbai, Nagpur, and Pune to name a few.
