The rape of a 31-year-old, on-duty, junior trainee doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, between the nights of August 9 and 10, has shaken the entire nation.

Massive protests all over the country have been taking place since then in all possible ways. As part of this, sex workers in Sonagachi, who are often blamed for ruining society, gave a clear message to the society.

What Is The Message From Sonagachi?

Amid the fury and widespread demand for justice and protocols for the safety of women, a peculiar video clip featuring a woman from Kolkata’s red light area is doing rounds on social media platforms.

The sex worker in the video said, If you have so much lust for a woman, come to us. Please don’t ruin the lives of women. Don’t destroy their lives by resorting to rape.” She said that the Sonagachi (red light area) in Kolkata is huge, and women there are willing to cooperate with the sexual needs of those who pay.

She added that it is high time society changed its way of thinking and men must not resort to raping women.

Her comments and opinions have gone viral and even moved the ones who very often disrespect and look down upon them.

She added, “We have a huge red-light area here where women work for as little as Rs 20-50. If you feel the need, come here instead. But please, don’t target women who are simply trying to earn a living. It’s time we change this mentality.

How Did The Netizens React?

She is being called a “hero” by the netizens, most of whom agree with her opinions. By widely sharing this video, they urged society to change their mentality and learn a lesson from the woman.

Most of the rapists share some common characteristics like lack of empathy or remorse, impulsivity, grandiosity, narcissism, lust for power and women’s body,” said one of the users.

Heartbreaking words. Red light area women doing better than inhumans,” said another.

Some had a different perspective to the said video clip. One of the netizens claimed, “It’s not about lust it’s about havaniyat and darindigi also people who justify prostitution please tell me if a monster do all this to a prostitute then is it ok?? Is she not a human being? ”

While another one believed, “Welcoming this statement can be seen as a way of avoiding the harder work of changing attitudes, behaviors, and systems that perpetuate sexual violence. This approach can unintentionally reinforce harmful norms rather than challenging and transforming them.”

As of today, the entire case is yet to be solved, and investigations are still ongoing.
