RicoThaDon is an upcoming hip hop artist from Chicago, Illinois, ready to take his hometown, and soon the world, by storm with his musical prowess. Born Donnie Hawkins, RicoThaDon explains that his stage name spawned from the nickname, Rico, which his mother has always called him. The artist then attached “ThaDon” at the end to represent an abbreviation of his actual first name. Ironically, the term “Don” usually refers to a boss or leader in pop culture, which could someday become the perfect description for RicoThaDon as he climbs his way to the top of the music industry.
RicoThaDon explains that he has been writing music since he was around 12-years-old; however, he did not begin to officially release his music until after he graduated from college a little over a year ago. The rap artist graduated from Chicago State University on a track scholarship, where he studied business management. RicoThaDon garnered roughly over 50,000 streams with the release of his very first project, an EP titled “Heartbreak Kid.” The artist was even able to obtain a collaborative contribution from Baltimore rapper King Los on a single off of the EP called “Stay Down.”
RicoThaDon explains that his main source of inspiration is his mother, who has always been a substantial support system for him and is the main person who pushed him to receive his college education. Popular music artists that have influenced his craft include J. Cole, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and Young Jeezy. RicoThaDon explains that he differs from other artists because he has no intention of being anybody else but himself. Oftentimes, artists attempt to become famous by emulating someone who has already reached his or her own level of success, but RicoThaDon is unsupportive of such antics. RicoThaDon asserts that his work ethic is unmatched as he has been known to work three different jobs simply to support his music career. Rather than use the cheapest means necessary to release his music to the world, RicoThaDon invests all of his money into studio sessions and the proper engineers in order to ensure that the quality of his music is optimized. Prior to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, RicoThaDon was performing at about 3 to 4 shows per week. Now that concerts have been restricted, the artist has been forced to connect with his fans solely through social media. Regardless, RicoThaDon is sure that he can successfully promote his brand online as a result of his collegiate studies in marketing. Music listeners around the world should prepare for RicoThaDon’s next EP “Heartbreak Hotel,” which will release early 2021.
