Breakfast Babble: How Google Maps Turned My Simple Trip Into A Real-Life Treasure Hunt

Breakfast Babble is ED’s own little space on the interwebs where we gather to discuss ideas and get pumped up (or not) for the day. We judge things too. Sometimes. Always. Whatever, call it catharsis and join in people.

There was a time when I thought Google Maps was the ultimate travel guide—like a digital guru that would lead me flawlessly from Point A to Point B. I mean, what could go wrong when satellites and fancy algorithms are involved, right?

Turns out, Google Maps isn’t as reliable as it claims to be. Instead, it’s like that overconfident friend who swears they know the way but just ends up confusing you more.

It all started when I decided to visit a friend’s place. Now, I’ve never been there before, but with Google Maps in hand, what could go wrong? Famous last words. I typed in the address, hit “start,” and off we went. “Turn left,” it chirped innocently. Alright, done.

“Now take the next right.” Sure thing. I was feeling good—confident even. But then came the weird instructions, “Turn left, then another right, then slightly left, then… wherever life takes you.” Before I knew it, I was driving through streets so narrow, that I was practically in someone’s living room.

I glanced at Google Maps, and it proudly informed me that I was “on the fastest route”. Fast? I was now stuck in a dead-end alley, staring at a stray dog that seemed more familiar with the area than I was.

And just when I thought it couldn’t get worse, that dreaded voice said “Recalculating”. Recalculating? More like “Oops, my bad, let’s try this again.” Each recalculation felt like a personal attack—Google Maps mocking my existence while leading me deeper into this labyrinth.

But the true magic happens when Google Maps decides to take you through the scenic route. Scenic for whom, though? The cows crossing the street? The potholes?

At one point, it directed me onto a road so narrow that my car mirrors were practically begging for their lives. I wasn’t driving anymore—I was tiptoeing through what felt like the Indian version of a Mario Kart obstacle course.

Then there were the missing landmarks. “In 100 metres, you’ll see a hospital,” Google Maps assured me. I looked around, only to find an abandoned building that hadn’t seen a patient since the 1980s. Classic.

By the time I finally reached my friend’s place—two hours late, mind you—I had survived Google Maps’ real-life treasure hunt. Maybe next time, I’ll just stick to asking the local chai-wala for directions. At least he won’t lead me into Narnia.
