Breakfast Babble: Here Are Some Nonsensical Lessons I Get From Bollywood Songs

Breakfast Babble is ED’s own little space on the interwebs where we gather to discuss ideas and get pumped up (or not) for the day. We judge things too. Sometimes. Always. Whatever, call it catharsis and join in people.

Bollywood songs. They’re not mere catchy tunes to dance to at weddings or belt out in the shower. No, no, they’re the holy grail of life advice—if you’re living in an alternate universe where logic is as scarce as a clear road in Mumbai at rush hour.

Over the years, I’ve picked up some valuable, albeit nonsensical, life lessons from these melodic gems. Here’s what Bollywood has taught me, and why you should not take this advice seriously.

Fighting with your partner? Break into a dance. Had a bad day at work? Dance it out. Entire village under threat? Gather everyone for a choreographed dance sequence.

Bollywood has taught us that there’s no problem too big that can’t be solved with some synchronised moves. And if the dancing doesn’t work, well, you’ve at least burned some calories and created a viral TikTok.

In the world of “Chammak Challo,” wooing someone is less about meaningful connection and more about flashing your moves and swagger. Who needs emotional depth when you can just be a “Chammak Challo?” Just be ready to dazzle and dance your way through all of life’s challenges. After all, substance is secondary to style—at least in Bollywood’s universe.

If you’re ever feeling lost or unsure about life’s big questions, this song suggests that the answers lie… behind the blouse. Yes, you read that right. Bollywood, in its infinite wisdom, tells us to search for the meaning of life in the most unlikely of places.

Spoiler: It’s not behind the blouse. But don’t let that stop you from embarking on this thoroughly misguided treasure hunt.

The secret to flirting is to wink like you’re trying to send a signal to aliens on Mars. “Aankh Marey” has convinced generations that aggressive winking is the way to someone’s heart. It’s a wonder optometrists haven’t had a field day with this one. The next time you’re in a social situation, why not assault someone’s senses with relentless winks? After all, subtlety is for amateurs.

If you ever wondered how to impress someone, “Gandi Baat” teaches us the time-honoured tactic of acting like a primitive caveman. What the modern world needed was a reminder that sophistication is overrated and all you need to win hearts is some “gandi baat.”

Try channelling your inner Tarzan—you might just swing your way into someone’s heart. Or, you know, get slapped.

So, there you have it, the nonsensical yet oddly entertaining life lessons I’ve picked up from Bollywood songs. They’ve taught me that love is relentless, logic is optional, and if all else fails, just break into a dance.

While these lessons are best left to the silver screen, they do make for some good laughs and maybe, just maybe, a little bit of inspiration to add some Bollywood drama to your otherwise mundane life. But remember, take them with a pinch of salt—or, better yet, a whole bag.
