Brazilian swimmer Ana Carolina Vieira was reportedly expelled from the currently ongoing Paris Olympics 2024 after she broke a pretty big rule for athletes staying in the village in Paris. The ‘village’ is a designated space where all athletes participating in the Olympic games have to stay.
The Games Village for the Paris Olympics is said to be able to house 14,000 athletes and officials and is as big as 70 football pitches.
What Happened With The Brazilian Swimmer?
As per a Reuters report, Brazilian swimmer Ana Carolina Vieira was sent home while her teammate and boyfriend 28-year-old swimmer Gabriel Da Silva Santos was given a warning after they broke a big rule for athletes participating in the games.
The Brazilian Olympic Committee (BOC) revealed on Sunday that the reason for the 22-year-old swimmer being sent home was because she and her teammate left the athletes’ village on Friday night, 26th July without getting permission from their team.
This was just a night before they were competing for the 4×100 meters freestyle relay in men’s and women’s category Brazil’s team on Saturday, July 27.
The duo’s infraction was caught after they posted about it on their social media and as per Brazilian media when pulled up for this act Vieira allegedly abused the BOC too.
In BOC’s official statement they wrote: “With this, in common agreement with the members of the Technical Committee of the sport, with the Team Leader and with the Brazilian Confederation of Aquatic Sports (CBDA), the COB decided to punish the two athletes for having left the Olympic Village without authorization last Friday.”
It further read “In addition to this fact, the athlete Ana Carolina, in a disrespectful and aggressive manner, contested the technical decision taken by the Brazilian Swimming Team committee. As a result, Gabriel Santos was given a warning and athlete Ana Carolina Vieira was dismissed from the delegation. She will return to Brazil immediately.”
Santos was laid off with just a warning because he reportedly apologised for breaking the rule.
Gustavo Otsuka, the head of Brazil’s swimming team, also commented on this incident saying, “We’re not here playing or taking a vacation. We’re here working for Brazil, for the 200 million taxpayers who are working for us.”
Otsuka who informed the COB about the duo’s “inappropriate” behaviour, also said that Vieira disputed a technical decision by the country’s team lead saying, “We can’t play around here. She took a completely inappropriate position to make her point, her dismay, about the formation of the relay.”
He added, “It was during this period that we decided to take this situation to the disciplinary committee, discussed it and took the appropriate action. We ended up finding out through the posts.”

The Olympic Village has a bunch of strict rules that all Olympians must follow and if broken could result in expulsion from the games or more. As per a report by Give Me Sport “One of the most serious rules is that athletes are not permitted to leave the village without permission.”
Athletes also cannot stay in the country where the Olympic games are being held for longer than two days after their event has finished competitions and their Olympic Identity and Accreditation Card afterwards.
Besides this, parties and alcohol are also prohibited in the village and as per reports political, religious, and racial propaganda has also been banned since the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Who Is This Brazilian Swimmer?
Ana Carolina Vieira competed in the 4×100 metres freestyle relay team on Saturday 27th July and finished 12th in the heats while Santos competing for his third Olympic Games since debuting in 2016 was eliminated in the men’s 4×100 freestyle heats.
Ana Carolina Vieira is a Brazilian swimmer part of the country’s team for the Paris Olympics 2024.
She had previously represented her country in the 2020 Summer Olympics and gained popularity when she won the silver medal for the girls’ 4×100 metre freestyle relay at the 018 Summer Youth Olympics held in Buenos Aires.
This was the first time a Brazilian women’s relay team at an international championship won a medal.
Both Vieira and Santos are part of the Esporte Clube Pinheiros, a Brazilian athletics club that has the most athletes at the 2024 Olympics.
Vieira in a social media post after her departure has hit out against the COB and how they ignored her claims of harassment.
According to reports, in an Instagram story, she said, “I left there and left my materials. I didn’t know what to do. My things are there [in the Olympic Village]. I went to the airport in shorts. I had to open my suitcase at the airport.
I’m in Portugal. I’m going to Recife and then to Sao Paulo. I am helpless. I have had no access to anything. I have not been able to speak to anyone.
They told me to contact the COB channels. But how am I going to get in touch?”
She also continued how she had alerted higher-ups but “I have already filed a complaint of harassment, and nothing has been resolved, harassment within the team. I will speak to my lawyers. I promise to tell everything. I am sad, nervous, but with peace of mind because I know who I am. I know what my character and my nature are.”
She concluded by saying, “I hope to be able to defend Brazilian women’s swimming with great pride. I ask for patience and thank you.”
