You’re ecstatically spending your parent’s money on something you had no hand in. Your mother labored for hours and pushed you out of her sacred place and the doctor made sure she or you didn’t die. And here you are, making a grandiose statement and celebrating your n number of birthdays and all that hard work you didn’t do to make your existence possible.
Good job, my friend.
Honestly though, I, personally have a very different reason for not liking to celebrate birthdays.
I get that it’s just one day of the year that is essentially ‘your day’.
And we live in a society where we are raised with constant validation thrown for every little thing we do since we are born; so much so we are used to it and crave it constantly.
Why do you think social media is so popular? Why do you think Mark Zuckerburg is worth over 64 billion dollars today? It’s because humans crave attention.
And I can’t blame you for wanting to celebrate ‘your day’ when that’s the norm that was taught to you by your parents; and to them by their parents and so on.
My aversion to birthdays stems from the fact that if on ‘my day’, I don’t want to spend time with a particular person, then that person has the right to feel offended.
Why should I be obligated to spend the day with someone when it’s supposedly ‘my day’ and I can do whatever I want?
But the thing is, it’s not that I don’t want to spend my birthday with someone else. I’d rather not spend my birthday with anyone at all.

So here’s a small lil anecdote.
For my last birthday, I was in Chennai, for an internship. And it has by far been one of the best days I’ve had.
I went to work, came home early (not because I asked for special permission but because it was a half day due to some festival), took my wallet and my Kindle and made my way to the beach where I spent the rest of the day, well into nightfall and on my way back bought a butt load of cupcakes that I stuffed my face with that night while I watched the newest episode of Outlander.
Utter Bliss.
Aaaand I might be able to guess what you’re thinking.
“But you could have done this any other day of the year. Why not do something special? Go out! Party! YOLO”
But you see, that’s the beauty of the thing.
The things you do on your “birthday” could ALSO be done on any other day.
You wanna get sloshed? What’s stopping you?
You wanna go on that special trip to that place you have always wanted to go? Why do you have to wait for this one specific day to roll around?
You wanna buy a cake and cut it while your friends cheer for you? Let me give you a bit of advice, if you buy your friends food, they’ll cheer for you and MORE.
So stop waiting for special days to arrive so that you can Live Your Life.
And I’m sorry to do this but, like, seriously…
YOLO.
