We have already learned a lot about skin care from Japanese and Korean women. Thanks to them, we know the importance of the double cleaning of the skin, the need for a tonic (there are no excuses!) and finally, the anti-aging effect of facial massages (e.g. the Kobido technique). But this time we look at skin care for Danish women. Not only because they are known for having particularly beautiful skin, but also because their philosophy of life – hygge and the happiness of the little things – defines their clear, simple and effective beauty routine that we can learn from. We spoke to Rasmus Nørgård, a Danish fashion blogger to learn about scandinavian women’s beauty tips.
# 1 Less is more
The fact that Denmark is regarded by the UN as the happiest country in the world and has made the happiness of the little things its way of life can also be seen in skin care. The Danes are convinced that less is more. As Rasmus Nørgård explains, they like to take care of their skin in a simple, holistic way. “Danish women have a ‘less is more’ philosophy when it comes to their beauty and skin protection. This philosophy is characterized by the fact that it focuses on mental well-being and has high expectations in terms of effectiveness and sustainability”, he adds.
# 2 Two skin care tips for dry skin
Danish women tend to have dry skin, but, as Nørgård explains, not so much because of the low temperatures, but because of the dry heat of the heaters. That’s why they use two simple tricks: 1) After the serum, apply a few drops of a facial oil that leaves an invisible, protective film on the skin. 2) They mix their moisturizer with facial oil.
# 3 The four most important beauty products
“The four basic products in the Danish beauty routine are cleanser, moisturizer, antioxidant and sunscreen, ” explains Rasmus Nørgård. Above all, regular and thorough facial cleansing frees the skin from blackheads and enlarged pores.
# 4 Choosing the right moisturizer
It is precisely because they tend to have dry skin that Danish women know what constitutes good moisturizing care. They usually choose creams with active ingredients that donate a lot of moisture, including glycerine, hyaluronic acid and sodium PCA, which acts like a sponge and helps the skin to develop moisture.
# 5 Sun protection, always!
For years they have been following the golden rule of all dermatologists, which says that you can reduce skin aging by up to 80 percent if you use sunscreen every day. “Danes use SPF all year round because they know that the sun is just as harmful in winter as it is in summer,” he explains.
# 6 Incorporate antioxidants into your grooming routine
We understand how important sun protection is. But we still have to learn that this should also go hand in hand with antioxidant protection to reduce the cell damage caused by UV rays and free radicals. It is therefore important to apply a serum with antioxidants such as vitamin C or E before sun protection.
# 7 Rely on sustainability
The Danes pay attention (very carefully) to the sustainability of the cosmetics they use. “Maybe even more than on the effect,” says Rasmus. That is why they choose sustainable brands that have as little impact on the environment as possible. In addition to sustainability – over 2.5 billion cups of coffee are drunk in Denmark, that is more than 50 tons of ground coffee per year – this has other advantages for the skin such as improved radiance and anti-inflammatory properties.
