November 30, 2000: Yet another Indian woman has been crowned Miss World in the Millennium Dome in London, United Kingdom. With this victory, 18-year-old Priyanka Chopra becomes the 5th holder of the Miss World title of India.
This 18-year-old girl from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, competed against 95 other contestants in the Miss World Pageant 2000. She has been crowned with the prestigious title of Miss World, with Giorgia Palmas (Italy) and Yüksel Ak (Turkey) emerging as runner-ups.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Miss World Beauty Pageant, making Chopra’s win even more special.
The event was held in the Millennium Dome in London, United Kingdom, with a few parts filmed in the Maldives. This year, the Miss World event had an emotional weight, being the first Miss World edition held after the passing of its founder, Eric Morley, earlier this year. However, Julia Morley, his spouse, stepped up to fill his position, ensuring the smooth turning out of events.
Jerry Springer and Rebecca de Alba were the co-hosts of the pageant this year. The Miss World 2000 final was opened by the contestants as they shone in spectacular, dazzling outfits by Hemant Trevedi.
The finale turned out to be a great spectacle, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats throughout the event. From the introduction of the contestants to the announcement of the winners, the air was filled with excitement and anticipation.
As the pageant continued through its various rounds, each competitor proved their abilities. Indians were particularly drawn to Priyanka Chopra, as she garnered strong reactions from the audience.
As the competition came down to the question round, the Millennium Dome was echoing with hopeful cheers, with everyone in the audience strongly rooting for their own country.
Soon, it was Chopra’s turn. As she walked onto the stage in her charming and poised presence, the crowd turned into a harmony of loud applause.
She was asked, “Who do you think is the most successful woman living today, and why?”
And Priyanka definitely won hearts as she answered, “There are a lot of people I admire, but one of the most successful women who has achieved a lot not only for herself but for other countries, I think, would be Mother Teresa.
I admire her from the bottom of my heart for being so compassionate, considerate, and kind.”
The final announcements were made with Giorgia Palmas of Italy standing as the first runner-up, followed by Yüksel Ak of Turkey. Then, the title of Miss World 2000 was announced.
This year, this honour has been claimed by Priyanka Chopra. This is a special victory for India as it marks the second successive year of India winning this title. Priyanka Chopra received the crown from Yukta Mookhey, officially becoming the fifth Indian woman to win it after Reita Faria (1966), Aishwarya Rai (1994), Diana Hayden (1997), and Yukta Mookhey (1999).
Today is a special day as India brings home honour and prestige, crowned on the head of its daughter. Priyanka Chopra’s victory isn’t just limited to this competition; it is a reminder to every girl in India to dream big and step up to achieve whatever she wishes.
