Breakfast Babble: If My Sunday Had Background Music

-

Breakfast Babble is ED’s own little space on the interwebs where we gather to discuss ideas and get pumped up (or not) for the day. We judge things, too. Sometimes. Always. Whatever, call it catharsis and join in, people.

If my Sunday had background music, it wouldn’t start with violins or sunrise chants. No, it would open with “Gudgudee” (Tare Zameen Par) as my alarm goes off and I pretend to snooze for just five more minutes.

Except, by the 8th snooze, it feels more like the background score of a horror movie, with my blanket as the villain that refuses to let me go.

When I finally roll out of bed and stumble into the kitchen, the soundtrack shifts. Enter “Khaana Khaake” (Jagga Jasoos) as I experiment with poha. My coriander garnish is a disaster, but in my head, I’m Ranbir Kapoor in a quirky montage, dancing with spatulas. The toaster almost burns my bread, perfect timing for a trumpet flourish.

By mid-morning, I decide to do “serious adulting” aka laundry. The washing machine starts its dhun-dhun-dhun, and suddenly “Aahun Aahun” (Love Aaj Kal) feels like the only appropriate track. I’m half folding clothes, half performing a flash mob nobody asked for.

My neighbour probably thinks I’ve lost it, but Bollywood never judged a heroine with dramatic hair flips while holding socks.

Afternoon chaos? That’s the sabzi mandi. The bargaining soundtrack is clearly “Parda” (Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai), high energy, sly lyrics, and full swagger as I argue over bhindi rates like a mafia don. When I actually get free dhaniya, I imagine confetti falling while the chorus shouts my victory. The bhajiwala is just confused.

Evening rain brings out my inner filmi star. Pakoras in the kadhai, chai in hand, and “Chandni Raat Hai” (Jahan Ara, yes, I’m retro like that) starts crooning. Do I dramatically lean on the balcony railing like I’m in a black-and-white classic? Absolutely!

Do I slip a little because the floor is wet? Also yes! Still counts as choreography.

Finally, night arrives. I’m in pyjamas, scrolling endlessly on my phone, while “Yun Hi Chala Chal” (Swades) plays in the background, ironic, because I haven’t moved an inch in two hours. My Sunday ends not like a Karan Johar climax, but like an indie film: anticlimactic, weird, but with charm.

Because honestly, if my Sunday had background music, it wouldn’t be a blockbuster. It would be a jukebox of underrated gems, choreographed chaos, and one girl living like her own funky musical, socks, sabzi, and all.
