Ford celebrated the 50th birthday of its Mustang by displaying the new model convertible on top of the Empire State Building in New York.
One of my favorite cars of all time is the Ford Mustang. It is one of the most iconic cars in the world. It’s come a long way and is about to appear in its 6th avatar since 1964. It was introduced on the 17th of April in 1964 in the New York World Fair. The Ford Mustang created the pony car market and this brought competitors from GM, Chrysler and American Motors. Yet, only a couple of them apart from the Stang have survived and sold profitably for 50 years straight! Over the years, the Mustang has become popular for being mod friendly and extremely customizable.
The car’s popularity took Ford by surprise also, it sold 500,000 units in its first production year (1964). One of the most sought after models is the 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback. The tie-up between Ford and the late Carrol Shelby is a very significant piece of the Mustangs history, The Shelby versions of the Mustang were the madder, fire breathing, tire shredding ones.
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the original American pony car, a special version of the Mustang. The 2015 Mustang 50 Year Edition GT Fastback is going to go on sale later this year. This car is going to feature a number of retro cues. 1964 special edition cars will be built.
The upcoming 2015 Mustang is going to be all-new. It is going to sit a little lower and slightly wider than the outgoing model. The front and rear have been reworked, giving it a rather aggressive look. It’l be offered in 4 cylinder, V6 and V8 engine options. The 4-cylinder engine returns to the line-up after 20 years, to address the efficiency conscious consumers. The basic coupe and convertible will start at $22,000 and $27,000 respectively. This generation of the Mustang will come with right-hand drive variants for European markets and hopefully we may see it in India too.
