There have been those couple of Indian films that we have all watched and felt that it was way ahead of its time. And sadly because of that, those films were unable to get the appreciation and love that they deserved.
A few others are of the category that though they were recognized for being the gems that they were and surely have carved their own niche in the industry, considered to be classics in their own right, the audience desperately wants something like that again.
In the midst of the mindless and frankly repetitive storylines that we are surrounded by, it would be great if a couple of films from the bygone era could be re-released so that we can take in what actual cinema is like.
Whether it be to give a good film a second chance or to introduce the new generation to those precious films that they are unaware of, according to me, these 5 Indian films deserve to be re-released:
1. Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron:
I know, I know that this is a cult classic and already enjoys a good sized fan base. But at the same time, many people from the younger generation are not familiar with the actual perfection of this movie, as they have only heard stories from their elders about this movie.
Re-releasing this epic film in today’s time, when many of the audience members are hungry for good storytelling, direction, and acting, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron would be perfect for this case.
2. The Apu Trilogy:
The Apu Trilogy, comprising of 3 Bengali films Pather Panchali, Aparajito, and Apur Sansar, were directed by Satyajit Ray. Need I really say anymore? Just the very fact that it has been helmed by the great Satyajit Ray should be enough of a reason for these 3 movies to be re-released.
Furthermore, the stories, the direction and the entire feel of the movies is the epitome of cinematic perfection. Thus it is high time that the new generation be exposed to what actual film-making is, through the big screen.
3. Mirch Masala :
This 1987 movie directed by Ketan Mehta starred the talented Smita Patil and Naseeruddin Shah and the plot revolved around how Patil’s character fights against the antagonists and her journey to eventual victory.
Although the plot might be considered to overdone, however the powerful performances by Patil, Shah and Om Puri make it a joy to watch and makes a strong impact with its female protagonist.
4. No Smoking:
This 2007 film by Anurag Kashyap starring John Abraham and Paresh Rawal in titular roles, was a box-office flop and even panned by critics in India.
However, according to me, one reason for this could have been that the Indian audience was not ready for such a kind of movie and thus was unable to grasp the varying themes in it. It is not a bad film just had unfortunate timing.
I believe that it would get a more favourable review were it to be re-released in today’s time.
5. Fire (1996):
After the whole Lipstick Under My Burkha fiasco, I just want this 1996 film to be re-released out of spite. But more than that, there are quite a few points as to why this film deserves to be re-released.
One it was based on the well-known story by Ismat Chugtai, ‘Lihaaf’, and second it was one of first mainstream Bollywood film that explored the area of homosexual relations. Third, the extremely wonderful performances by Nandita Das and Shabana Azmi are sure to bowl over any of the current actresses.
So these were my picks, let me know in the comments section of which Indian movies would you want to be re-released in 2017.
