Artificial intelligence (AI) is slowly creeping into every aspect of human life, from writing emails to generating music. But can it help fix your relationship? A recent study published in PLOS Mental Health suggests that AI, particularly ChatGPT, may be just as effective as traditional therapists in guiding couples through their romantic problems.
With AI responses often rated higher for empathy and cultural competence, it raises an interesting question: Should we start trusting machines with our hearts?
AI Vs. Human Therapists: Who Does It Better?
The study conducted by Ohio State University and Hatch Data and Mental Health involved 830 participants, about half of whom were in relationships. Researchers pitted responses from 13 human experts—clinical psychologists, marriage therapists, and a psychiatrist—against ChatGPT in simulated couples therapy sessions.
Interestingly, participants struggled to differentiate between AI-generated responses and those from real therapists. They correctly identified the human response only 56.1% of the time and guessed ChatGPT’s response correctly 51.2% of the time. This suggests that AI’s ability to provide therapeutic advice is already impressively close to human standards.
What Makes AI’s Advice So Effective?
One surprising takeaway from the study was that ChatGPT often provided responses that adhered better to core psychotherapy principles than human therapists. AI-generated advice was rated higher in terms of empathy, cultural sensitivity, and emotional validation.
For instance, when a participant confessed to having cheated early in the relationship, the AI response emphasised understanding “difficult emotions and improving communication,” whereas the therapist’s response was simpler: “I’m sorry you’re having this experience, it can be very hard, and isolating, to carry that kind of guilt.” AI’s structured approach to problem-solving made it appear more considerate and reflective.
Will You Trust An AI Therapist With Your Romantic Woes?
This is the million-dollar question. If AI can offer high-quality emotional support, should couples replace human therapists with chatbots? While AI might excel at neutrality and structured responses, traditional therapists bring personal intuition, lived experience, and human warmth—elements that a machine, no matter how advanced, might struggle to replicate.
Moreover, while AI can analyse words and patterns, it cannot truly feel emotions. Therapy often involves non-verbal cues, tone, and body language—things an AI simply cannot interpret. So, while AI might serve as a helpful tool, it’s unlikely to completely replace human therapists anytime soon.

Can AI Be Too Creative?
Another crucial concern is how AI-generated therapy is controlled. The study warns that if AI is given too much freedom in crafting responses, it could potentially cause harm. AI is trained to be empathetic, but without strict guidelines, it might validate harmful behaviours or misinterpret cultural nuances.
For example, if an AI becomes “too creative” in its advice, it could unintentionally encourage unhealthy relationship dynamics. The authors suggest that while AI can enhance therapy, it must be closely monitored by mental health professionals to prevent ethical and psychological risks.
AI And The Future Of Couples Therapy
The study’s authors argue that AI integration in therapy is not a question of if, but when. Mental health experts will soon need to understand machine learning processes to collaborate with AI effectively.
Rather than viewing AI as a replacement for therapists, it might be more useful as a supplementary tool. AI chatbots could offer immediate support for those who lack access to professional help, providing relationship advice on-demand while humans handle more complex emotional cases.
A Helping Hand, Not A Replacement
AI’s potential in therapy is undeniably impressive. It can provide neutral, well-structured, and empathetic responses, sometimes even outshining human therapists in clarity and cultural awareness. However, human connection, intuition, and emotional intelligence remain irreplaceable in deep psychological healing.
For those facing minor relationship struggles, AI therapy could serve as a great starting point. But for deeper issues, there’s still no substitute for the warmth and wisdom of a trained professional. While AI may help mend hearts, true healing still requires a human touch.
