Why Is The Sonu Nigam Stone Pelting Scandal At The DTU Fest Seeming Fishy

-

The scandal of Sonu Nigam being pelted by stones while performing at a Delhi Technological University (DTU) college fest has been going viral since yesterday.

Now, in an interesting turn of events, Sonu Nigam himself has come forward to deny that such an incident occurred, directly contradicting the many media reports that had emerged yesterday regarding the incident.

Sonu Nigam Clarifies

On 26 March 2025, Sonu Nigam posted on Instagram and refuted any claims that any sort of stone pelting took place at the concert. Posting an image while wearing the ‘Pookie’ hat, he wrote, “Nothing like the hurling of stones or bottles, as mentioned in some media, happened at DTU. There was one vape thrown by someone on stage that hit Subhankar’s chest, and that was when I was informed about it. I paused the show and reminded the collegians that the performance would have to be abruptly stopped if something like that happened again. The only thing thrown on stage after that was the Pookie band, which was really Pookie…”

Media Reports About Stone Pelting

On March 25, several media outlets reported on how Sonu Nigam was pelted with stones and bottles while performing at DTU’s Engifest 2025 college festival on Sunday. A report from The Indian Express stated, “The incident occurred during his performance at Delhi Technological University’s (DTU) Engifest 2025 on Sunday when sections of the crowd began pelting stones and bottles at the stage. Upon noticing this, Nigam halted his performance midway and urged the audience of over one lakh students to refrain from such actions that could endanger those on stage.”

A Hindustan Times report also claimed that this occurred, stating that Sonu Nigam then halted the concert and said, “Main aapke liye aaya hun yahan pe so that we can all have a good time. I’m not asking you to not enjoy, but please aisa na kariye” (I have come here for you so that we can all have a good time. I’m not asking you to not enjoy, but please don’t do this).

Another report by NDTV claimed that “The show took an ugly turn when a section of the crowd—over one lakh students—began pelting stones and bottles at the stage.” However, there was no source provided for any of these claims. Typically, such media reports include posts or videos capturing the events as proof or indicate which user first noticed or posted about it online.

Instead, none of these reports contained any visual evidence of the alleged stone pelting. Most of the videos included in these reports were from other performances by Sonu Nigam or depicted the moment when someone threw the pink bunny headband onto the stage while he was singing “Kya se Kya ho gaya.”

Nothing On Social Media

The thing that was a bit confusing, though, was that upon researching social media, there was not any hard evidence that the stone pelting happened in the first place. Most of the videos shared from the event were about Sonu Nigam wearing the bunny hat that got him the nickname ‘Pookie.’ However, there were no posts, videos, or images of any stone pelting occurring.

Upon researching across platforms like Instagram, Reddit, and Twitter, no eyewitness accounts or comments supported that controversy or claimed that they had seen it themselves. There was one video posted by Instagram user @shruti_sethi15, where she uploaded footage of people at the concert flinging plastic water bottles around in the crowd. However, it is unclear if Sonu Nigam’s performance had started by then or if these bottles themselves were thrown at the singer.

In fact, today, a few people who were actually at the concert commented under the thread titled, “‘Pookie’ Sonu Nigam Issues Clarification on Stone Pelting Incident During His Concert!!” on the subreddit r/BollyBlindsNGossip.

User autistic-peanut wrote, “The bottles in question were actually kids throwing them at each other in the non-VIP area (still messed up, yes), but none were thrown at Sonu Nigam. Other than this incident, the concert was smooth.”

Another user, @Unusual_Mongoose_408, commented, “Exactly, I was there too; what is being shown in the news is not how it actually happened at all.”

Furthermore, there has been no official statement from DTU commenting on this scandal, whether refuting or apologising for it.

This certainly raises questions about how media reports are being disseminated these days and highlights the need for transparent journalism.
