The Indian filmmaker Karan Johar is back in the news. But this time, he is not battling any other director or producer; he decided to sue YouTuber CarryMinati or Ajey Nagar.
Apparently, the filmmaker has taken offence to some comments made against him in a YouTube video and decided to sue the content creator for defamation.
As per reports, Johar felt that the video, which parodied his own celebrity talk show Koffee With Karan, contained “defamatory, vulgar and abusive” statements targeting him and Bollywood’s nepotism culture.
A Mumbai civil court has now granted Johar interim legal relief, restraining CarryMinati and associated parties from publishing or circulating any such content and directing platforms to take down the material in question.
Why Did Karan Johar Sue CarryMinati?
According to reports, the whole thing started when CarryMinati, who has over 45 million subscribers on YouTube, posted a roast video titled ‘Coffee With Jalan’ that was said to be inspired by Karan Johar’s own celebrity talk show Koffee With Karan.
Soon after, Karan Johar, represented by DSK Legal, filed for an injunction against CarryMinati or Ajay Nagar, and his associates, including his manager Deepak Char, One Hand Clap Media Pvt Ltd, and Google and Meta, claiming that the video used abusive language and disparaging remarks about Bollywood, nepotism and Johar himself.
In the case titled Karan Johar v. Ajey Nagar & Ors, the plaintiff alleged that the video was ridiculing the filmmaker along with his reputation and goodwill that was “painstakingly built over decades” and asked that Nagar and his associates be restrained from ever making and uploading such videos.
In his plea, Johar stated, “The statements are so vulgar and abusive that they immediately needs to be taken down,” along with how “Unknown persons are making reels of it and again circulating it in the social media,” and how they were being viewed by ‘millions of people’.

On February 9, 2026, principal sessions judge Pandurang Bhosale at a Mumbai court heard the plea and passed the verdict that forbade Carryminati, along with associates like Meta Platforms and others, from publishing or circulating any “objectionable or defamatory” content against the filmmaker.
Judge Bhosale stated, “Prima facie, it appears that Ajey Nagar and Deepak Char (manager of the CarryMinati channel) have made defamatory statements and used vulgar language against the plaintiff. These videos need to be taken down immediately.
There should be an injunction against all those who circulate and re-circulate these videos on social media platforms. This is a fit case to pass ad-interim injunction orders against the defendants.”
CarryMinati’s legal team, including advocate Vikas Khera, Kukreja, and Alpna Mishra, countered by saying that the original videos had already been deleted voluntarily, arguing that this left “no cause of action” for the suit to proceed.
They further claimed that the court lacked jurisdiction for this particular suit and that, despite their client asking for seven days to verify the claims made by the petitioner, the latter had rushed in filling the suit, not allowing Nagar the time to present his side.
The order also directed major platforms, including Meta Platforms (Instagram, Facebook) and Google (YouTube), to remove the flagged videos and URLs that relate to the alleged defamatory content.
According to reports, authorities also issued John Doe orders to cover unidentified individuals who might try to re-upload or circulate similar clips or reels.
