Australia witnessed various rallies breaking out, protesting against increasing immigration in the country on the last day of August 2025. Thousands of protesters came out on the streets of cities, including Sydney and Melbourne, calling out against the immigration of outsiders into the country.
Although this is nothing unusual, a lot of countries that have large immigrant populations, at one time or another, come out with such protests. However, the strange thing about these protests was the singling out of the Indian expat population there specifically.
What Are The Anti-Immigration Rallies In Australia?
On August 31, 2025, several cities in Australia, like Sydney and Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Adelaide, Perth, and others, saw thousands of people gathering to attend the ‘March for Australia’ rally.
As per the Australian Broadcasting Corp, in Sydney alone, around 5,000 to 8,000 people attended this rally.
Simultaneously, the Refugee Action Coalition held a counter-rally, with a coalition spokesperson stating that “Our event shows the depth of disgust and anger about the far-right agenda of March For Australia.”
According to the ‘March for Australia’ website, the reason for these rallies stands as, “Our streets have seen growing displays of anti-Australian hatred, foreign conflicts, and disintegrating trust, whilst mass migration has torn at the bonds that held our communities together. This march is a stand for the people, culture, and nation that built Australia — and for our right to decide its future.”

The group’s X/Twitter posted a day before the rally that they aimed to do “what the mainstream politicians never have the courage to do: demand an end to mass immigration.”
Why Are Indians Being Targeted?
While the rallies were pitched as protests against mass migration affecting housing, infrastructure, and national cohesion, the targeting of Indian immigrants raised alarm bells.
As per the Australian Bureau of Statistics, data from June 2023 reveals that Australia, a country that has always had a largely immigrant population, currently has 8.4 lakh Indian -born residents in the country. This places Indian-born people as the second-largest migrant group in Australia.
While this might look like a large number, though, the Indian community makes up just 3.2% of the total Australian population in 2024. This could be one reason why the Indian community there is being specifically targeted.
The March for Australia rallies had flyers and manifestos that claimed “More Indians in five years, than Greeks and Italians in 100”, and how, “This isn’t a slight cultural change, it’s a replacement, plain and simple.”
Protester Glenn Allchin, speaking with Reuters during the Sydney rally, said, “It’s about our country bursting at the seams and our government bringing more and more people in. Our kids struggling to get homes, our hospitals, we have to wait seven hours, our roads, the lack of roads.”
While no particular group has come forward to claim responsibility for these rallies, reports have observed that far-right and neo-Nazi influence is strong with these protests. Some of the key figures that have been named as per reports are Thomas Sewell, leader of the National Socialist Network, and digital creators like “Bec Freedom” and Hugo Lennon.
“Bec Freedom” even recently claimed responsibility for the Sydney protest and openly spoke of protecting “white heritage” and European culture, but wanted to avoid calling it a Nazi rally because the stigma of that word might make people wary of joining the rally.
The Sydney Morning Herald even reported about a leaked audio of Freedom where she is heard saying, “…protect Australian heritage, culture, way of life. Next step, protect European culture, heritage, way of life. The next step is protect white heritage. It all means the same thing. It’s just different ways to put it, Australian heritage.”
