In tragic news, Ratan Tata the former chairman of one of India’s biggest conglomerates, Tata Sons, died at the age of 86.
Although there had been several speculations around his health for a few days, on Monday the industrialist clarified saying he was fine and was just getting routine medical checkups for his age.
However, on Wednesday, N Chandrasekaran, Chairman, of Tata Sons, in a statement posted late at night announced the passing of the Ratan Tata.
The statement read “It is with a profound sense of loss that we bid farewell to Mr. Ratan Naval Tata, a truly uncommon leader whose immeasurable contributions have shaped not only the Tata Group but also the very fabric of our nation.
For the Tata Group, Mr. Tata was more than a chairperson. To me, he was a mentor, guide and friend. He inspired by example. With an unwavering commitment to excellence, integrity, and innovation, the Tata Group under his stewardship expanded its global footprint while always remaining true to its moral compass.”
The business tycoon took over the $100 billion steel-to-software conglomerate as chairman in 1991 and was in position until 2012. He brought the company founded more than a hundred years ago by his great-grandfather to new heights by creating Tata Teleservices, a telecommunication company in 1996.
He created the world’s cheapest car in 2009, the Tata Nano priced at just Rs. 1 lakh in an attempt for middle-class people to be able to afford a car easily. Tata Group in 2004 also achieved a win for colonial India by acquiring Jaguar and Land Rover, two British card brands.
Who Could Be The Next Sucessor?
After his passing though, the biggest question is who will be the successor to Ratan Tata’s empire. Considering he never got married or had any children, the dynasty rule would not be applied here.
However, a couple of names are being circulated who could potentially take over the Tata Group’s almost Rs. 34 lakh crore business empire. Currently, N Chandrasekaran is the chairman of Tata Sons, the holding company, having taken the seat in 2017.
Noel Tata
Neol Tata, Ratan Tata’s half-brother from his father Naval Tata’s second marriage. Naval Tata got married to Simone Dunoyer, a businesswoman from Switzerland in 1955 and Noel Tata is their son from that marriage.
This places him as a strong contender to take over the Tata Group name. It is also said that Ratan Tata had a close relationship with Noel.
Other inheritors of the Tata legacy are Noel Tata’s three children Maya, Neville, and Leah Tata.
