When The World Is Crumbling, Here Is Some News To Make You Feel Good

-

There are a lot of things happening these days that make it seem like the world is crumbling. The news is constantly filled with pieces about how something or the other is going wrong, will go wrong, and how it will just make life even more difficult for the common people.

In the midst of that, here are some feel-good and positive new stories that might feel a bit uplifting.

Rat Earning World Record

A giant African pouched rat called Ronin has just managed to set a new world record for sniffing down over 100 mines. A Belgian charity, APOPO, announced in a statement that Ronin has successfully detected almost 109 landmines and “15 other potentially deadly war remnants” since he was deployed in 2021 to the northern Preah Vihear province.

Speaking about the five-year-old rat, APOPO said, “His exceptional accomplishments have earned him the Guinness World Records title for most landmines detected by a rat, highlighting the critical role of HeroRats in humanitarian demining.”

Ronin is not just a rat, though, not according to his handler Phanny, who claims, “He’s not just an asset, he’s a valued partner and colleague.”

Dire Wolves Back From Extinction

Dire wolves, an extinct species of animal, might have been revived. These large canines from southern Canada and the US region went extinct almost 13,000 years ago. They were said to look a bit similar to grey/ gray wolves but larger and with a white coat. A dire wolf could weigh almost 68 kg and was said to be almost 3.5 feet tall and over 6 feet in length.

This species became popular in pop culture after they were featured in the HBO series Game of Thrones based on George R R Martin’s fantasy novels A Song of Ice and Fire.

Now, US-based bioscience company Colossal Biosciences has claimed that “On October 1, 2024, for the first time in human history, Colossal successfully restored a once-eradicated species through the science of de-extinction. After a 10,000+ year absence, our team is proud to return the dire wolf to its rightful place in the ecosystem.”

Billionaire Ben Lamm and geneticist George Church founded the company. As per reports, two male pups named Romulus and Remus were born in October, and a female called Khaleesi was born January to surrogate dog mothers.

They are all genetically modified grey wolf pups that the company claims are “functional copies of something that used to be alive.”

According to experts, though, this doesn’t mean that dire wolves are back since the pups are grey wolves with genetic edits that make them close to the extinct species.
